Writing in Scientific American this week, retired NASA boffin Gilbert V Levin recalled his work with NASA's Viking mission to Mars in 1976.
NASA sent two separate Viking orbiter and lander pairs to Mars, which was the first time it had landed a spacecraft on the planet and had pictures sent back.
Levin ran the "Labelled Release" life detection experiment which returned its initial results on July 30, 1976.
"Amazingly, they were positive," Levin writes.
"As the experiment progressed, a total of four positive results, supported by five varied controls, streamed down from the twin Viking spacecraft landed some 4,000 miles (6,437km) apart.

quote:

"Inexplicably, over the 43 years since Viking, none of NASA’s subsequent Mars landers has carried a life detection instrument to follow up on these exciting results."

quote:

"Our nation has now committed to sending astronauts to Mars.
"Any life there might threaten them, and us upon their return. Thus, the issue of life on Mars is now front and centre."

Mars ain’t the kind of place to raise your kids. In fact it’s cold as hell.

I remember big news when I was a kid, life found on Mars! Well not exactly, it's fossilized ancient possible bacteria-like organisms so maybe some microscopic life. I wss a nerd kid

Then after like a month no one ever talked about it again

But I found it on the internet now, if you google "August 1996 life on mars" you'll see what I mean

Here's a CNN article calling it " the biggest discovery in the history of science. " LINK

Life is a vague term. Small parasites are life.

If one finds what is for certain a small parasite guess what that logically leads to...

Life really isn't a vague term at all sentient life however does have very blurred lines.
