Being from Plaquemines Parish we always put okra in gumbo,
Cause that's not Gumbo. That's Okra Gumbo.
Just as good, but 2 different things.

Hahah . I'm not a foodie or expert but I have found that Zats with a can of Hot Ro-Tel tossed in as well
is my FAVORITE Jambalaya EVER. Not sure about the box gumbos.

So an FSU degree gets you a kitchen position? Worth it.

You do know that the word "Gumbo" literally means "Okra" right?

Gumbo is a Cajun recipe
Cajuns live in louisiana
Louisiana is a southern state
Southern states associated with confederate flag
Confederate flag is racist
Killer is African American
He was killed because gumbo is racist.
Sorry had to do it but seriously over how much spice I find here in NLA they never make it spivey enough.

With your reputation I am going to safely assume you were on drugs when you ate this. Thus, I will forget you ever posted such a thing.

Hold up there, podnuh - almost certainly the Cajun and Creole dish carrying the name "Gumbo" (or, a variant I've seen in Southwest Asia, called "gombo" - it was more of a sauce piquante, cooked by Sri Lankans, in fact) - derives from the Bantu word for okra - or kingumbo or ngumbo - as okra itself is an African vegetable and almost certainly made its way into Louisiana cuisine via those of African extraction, I think it is fair to suggest that "gumbo" without okra is not technically gumbo.
On the other hand, I don't make gumbo with okra, as I don't really care for okra.
But, the more you know, right?
(And next time, class, I'll explain how "lagniappe" is neither Parisian nor Creole in nature, it is neither French nor Spanish in origin, but rather Native American - and from South America, at that - making it's way to Louisiana via Spanish Creoles.)
(I love this stuff - Louisiana has, by far, the most dense and interesting history of culture, language, cuisine, politics, military, etc. - the only modest rivals are Texas and California, which are the 2 biggest states, and we are relatively small, by comparison.)

Gumbo means okra. You cant have a gumbo without okra. Yall making stew.
quote:
where did gumbo come from? The answer can be found in its very name. In several West African languages, the word for okra is ki ngombo, or, in its shortened form, gombo." Early on, the word was frequently used alongside "okra" by English writers. In the 1840s, when okra was just starting to be grown widely outside the coastal South, newspaper ads commonly offered seeds for "Okra or Gombo." "Gombo" is still the French word for okra today.

You know I can honestly say Ive never eaten there.
But the best gumbo around here is at Fremins in Thibodaux. Smoked duck and andouille gumbo.

We definitely use okra and tomatoes up in Shreveport-Bossier. Only way to make a good North Louisiana gumbo.

So? I can assure you in Cajun country around Ville platte-- mamou --opelousas area, where it's as Cajun as it gets, there most certainly is a distinction between gumbo and okra gumbo.
They are thought of as two separate dishes.
