True enough. But if the mpg advantage isn't really there, then I guess the V8 is the better pick.

Do you have any experience with the 5.3 V8 Silverado?

It just seems so small for a full size truck.

Buddy tows a 8400lb camper with his 2.7. He can pull away from me in a similarly loaded 5.4

I think the eco came out in 2011. All of these are 2013+ models.

And that's what's tempting about the ecoboost. I just wonder how that little engine will hold up. I don't tow but I have a lead foot and expect it to last ten years.

Make them do the TSB before your truck hits 60k. Mine started doing it around 75-80 if i had to guess.

Mine is a 2013. I've got about 115k now.

Recently bought a 2017 XL FX4 with the 3.5 turbo and It's plenty of power. Also getting 19.5mpg combined, which is nice, but I didn't buy the truck to worry about mpg.

I have the 6.2. Good engine but sucky mileage.

The 5.0 is a proven engine, the ecoboosts appear to be still having issues.

Rule of thumb I go by is never buy a full sized truck or muscle car without a v8 or diesel!!!! I'd take a 5.0 over a turbo'd out the arse 4 or 6 cylinder any day of the week.

Think about it like this. They are adding power adders/turbos to make it powerful enough to use in a full sized truck. A naturally aspirated V8 does not need any help to do the same job.

I don't tow. It'll likely be 2WD. 50/50 mix of highway and city driving.

If you're not putting between 1000 and 2000 pounds of tools on it, it probably won't matter which motor in terms of gas mileage. I don't trust a motor for daily driving with two turbos stuck on it. My buddy is a Ford mechanic at a local dealership and the same time he replaced my dad's, he did at least 4 others within a 3 month span.

Yeah I know this isn't a new topic. But this thread has done it's job. V8 is the pick.

My dad has had to pay out of pocket to have a new motor and two turbos on it ($14k) because his motor blew up and wasn't covered

Was your dad's out of warranty or did Ford just figure out a way to weasel out of covering it?

I'm on my second Ecoboost in 3 years. First one I traded in with 120k miles and the one I'm in now has 30k. No issues with either one.

Nothing wrong with diesel, but that wasn't really one of the options the OP put up there.
