Nope owned 4 hardware stores and 4 outdoor power service centers.

Sold my homecenters to a regional chain 8 months ago.
Sold my outdoor power service centers to a national chain 4 months ago.

I made a lot more money than a fence company owner especially in the last year.

Paying more than $35k for a depreciating asset on wheels in my opinion is risky. I can use that money lost to make more money.

Smooth shifting is the result of clutching slipping in the transmission, slippage results in increased heat and additive package breakdown in the transmission fluid. That's why knowlegdeable mechanics do NOT follow the suggested fluid service intervals on these trucks (and haven't for a long time), they do a 30k mile OCI. My truck has an aftermarket valve body with upgraded hardware and a deep sump fluid pan with a magnetic drain plug. Shifts are much firmer than stock but that means the clutches aren't slipping on the steels as much which means less heat, longer life, and better torque holding.

Yep, manual is the way to fly unless you trade often enough to keep factory warranty.

Except almost nobody makes a manual and it will be a completely extinct option eventually. Fact is, a properly setup modern slush box is stronger and more capable than any manual unless you are shoehorning an Eaton 13 into your jacked up 3500 CTD. Even OTR trucks are increasingly going to automatics, the Eaton 18-speed will go the way of the old Spicer two-box eventually.

Yep. Dealt with that on the 700r4 in an old z71. Rebuilt with a kit to firm up shifts, no more problems.

Call it all you want but it doesn't change the truth. Development on manual transmissions has been at a virtual standstill for decades, automatic transmissions have seen continuous development and refinement. I have one vehicle with a 5-speed manual and two with 4-speed automatics and only the manual has had to come out for one issue or another.

The GM 10 speeds aren’t having the same issues. Wonder if it’s an programming issue on the Fords.

On its worst day, it’s probably better than a Honda/Nissan CVT.

That is an interesting subject. Manuals can be built to take as much HP/torque as any application requires but at the expense of shift smoothness and quality. While I don't really know the torque threshold where they become unwieldy, more germane with trucks, the generally accepted breakpoint for cars is the 450-500hp range. When you are dealing with lower horsepower some of the ZF and Getrag transmission were silky smooth as you move well over 400hp the appropriate trannys become rather balky.

Slushboxes will become near completely dominate in the next 5 years, sending manuals and automated manuals like DCTs, SMGs and PDKs to the history books. Then they won't last much longer since they are generally not needed with EVs.

They indeed do not seem to have the teething problems that Ford is having with the 10sp. GM's issues are with the 8L90 and 8L45 8 speed transmissions.

As for the Ford issue, the main problem seems to be on the electrical/electronic side which is allowing more slip than it should (it is already a very "slippy" tranny) which runs the temps up enough to destroy the hard parts.

If it's mainly the Raptor trucks then probably a heat issue. More powerful, heavier truck with bigger tires. OEMs almost never put in big enough auxiliary radiators for the transmission, my F150 got a big plate-style cooler which is probably double the size over the already larger tow package version.

I dont think the DCT will go away.
Sporty cars will use them.
They are also making their presence known in class 8 trucks. They are more efficient than a true automatic.

While one would think that it is not what the engineers are saying. While my current preference for a sporty gearbox is the PDK (Porsche's version of the DCT AKA Doppelkupplung which is painfully to close to kaplunk in English) they are seeing their advantages evaporate. The main advantage of the DCTs are their fast shifts and lightweight. Their disadvantages tend to be poor automatic performance (though much better than they were) and the fact they have to use "AI" to predict what next ratio you need will be if they misjudge ie expect an upshift when you need to downshift they have an unexpected delay since the transmission has already engaged the off power shaft to a (numerically) lower gear. Performance automatics have all but eliminated the shift time advantage and the ease of having 9-10 or more ratios in a slushbox has overshadowed the weight savings.

There are a lot of things I don't like about the evolution of fast cars (my primary interest) but manuals are all but gone and automated manuals with clutch packs seem to be next, if you believe the people that design and build them. Porsche and BMW M zealots are about the only groups with enough sway to hold back the tides for a while.

I am on my third Nissan with a CVT and never had any issues with them. Funny thing is that I will soon be purchasing a Silverado or Sierra and sounds might he experiencing my first transmission issue.

The GMc 10 speeds don’t seem to have the issues the Ford 10 speeds have.

I am waiting to see what the new Yukons are like.

Has to be some kind of control or program logic problem with the Fords. It’s General Motors hardware, and General Motors isn’t have these issues with the same 10 speeds.

The Nissan Titan I bought as a dealer demo loaded with the Cummins diesel from a friend. He is a sales manager for a Nissan Dealer in Texas and needed to sell it. Cross my fingers hope it last more than a few years as this is my truck not my business truck. It was a really eye opening aggressive price versus a gas truck and I really did not want a diesel truck.

The Titan is an okay truck, but Nissan is canceling the diesel model for 2020.

Thats a shame. Cummins with the aisin was a nice combo.

I am probably going to break down and buy a new frontier pro4x with a 6 spd before they are gone.

Kind of glad my 2017 has the 6 speed considering all of the issues I've read about with the 10.

Nope. I'm a consultant to the industry. With Ford and GM and Toyota product. Own a 2002 Silverado 2500 diesel 4X4 with an old style 4 speed auto with 217K on it. A 2007 Tahoe Z-71 with 315K and original 5.3L that uses about a half quart between changes and 2016 GMC Canyon with a 6 speed that HAS given me issues with fuel system. And a 2015 Chrysler 200 with 80K (daughter's car) that I purchased off neighbor for her because it was under powered. It is. Which is what I was looking for but it also gets 30 MPG and has given zero issues to this point. And it was cheap. No Fords or late model Silverado's or Toyota/Hondas. Only tranny problem is a small leak in my 315K Tahoe. Which I'll get fixed in my own time.

Ford is in a semi-panic because the F series is Ford. More distressing news. GM headed up the other half of the co-op by developing the same concept in a 9 speed for Ford and Chevy transverse engine SUV's which Ford has declined to put in theirs because of the 10 speed issues.

But I have an even better witness than the news around the dealerships. My BIL owns a huge transmission repair facility. "Jim, those things are quitting like clockwork, somewhere around 60K miles". They'll get 'em fixed but the ones on the road....boom bud.
