Not with how they inflated the price if the Explorer IMO.
The Escape is too small for a rear-facing car seat without cramping the front seat, and not everyone wants or needs a 3 row crossover.
The Edge hit the sweet spot for our family.
ETA: Having Lincoln versions of all of them was pretty pointless though.

Yep.
Lincoln is rarely in a stand alone dealer. They don't need to flood their lineup with crossovers for their dealerships to pay the bills. Presumably, the Lincoln dealer also sells Fords.
The Edge is a good size for a lot of families, but I would buy an Outback or Grand Cherokee instead.
Maybe the replacement for the Edge will just be a shorter version of the Explorer, which means a switch to a rear drive chassis. That could be a good thing assuming they don't screw it up...although I doubt Ford replaces it with an ICE vehicle at all.

I get Ford retaining a "regular size" SUV and a compact, but I always associated the Edge with a higher quality vehicle and I'm kind of surprised they didn't keep that branding.
Will this leave the JGC as the only traditional standard size SUV left or have the Rav4 and the like gotten big enough to rival it?

Nissan Murano, Chevy Blazer, Honda Passport, Subaru Outback, Toyota Venza, VW Atlas Cross Sport, Hyundai Santa Fe........that mid sized crossover/SUV segment is PACKED. The Edge was never a real SUV. It's always a front drive crossover - and there are many competitors.
The Grand Cherokee and 4Runner are more off road oriented products than the Edge.
*I guess you can consider the Outback a station wagon though.

I think recent years of the 4Runner have third rows as an option, but they're not standard.
I'd still put it in the traditional SUV category. It hasn't really changed body style that drastically over the years.
