The Center for Auto Safety is again calling on Ford Motor Co. to recall 1.3 million Ford Explorer crossovers over an increasing number of complaints that they leak carbon monoxide.
The group, which posted a letter addressed to Ford CEO Jim Hackett on Tuesday, claims roughly 1,400 driver complaints have been logged with NHTSA regarding exhaust leaks. NHTSA, the nation's top auto safety regulator, opened its investigation in July 2016, the center says.

Regarding the public’s Explorer concerns, Jason Levine, executive director of the Center for Auto Safety, said in a statement that Ford “needs to stop sending mixed messages to Explorer owners and passengers, including senior citizens and parents of young children, that the vehicles are 'safe,' and that repairs are available only for 'peace of mind.' Since some Ford dealers are responsibly replacing cracked exhaust manifolds, it is time for Ford to take a more serious step, recall all of these vehicles, and inspect and replace cracked exhaust manifolds."
If you have one of these, you need to have someone look at the exhaust manifold. Some dealerships and fleet managers are apparently replacing broken manifolds to address this problem.
It impacts Explorers built since 2011.

shite like this is why a dealership network is GOOD for the consumer. You can damn well bet plenty of them are pissed and are putting a ton of pressure on Ford to go ahead and issue the recall to stop any loss in consumer confidence.

Exhaust manifolds are expensive to repair, and it's possible that the defect is present in other Fords that share the power train.
The dealership would rather alleviate the concerns of their customers than let them buy a new Highlander, Traverse, Acadia, or Pilot.

No, the MSRP might be $50K, but the cost was more like $32K.

I rented a brand new and loaded Explorer last year.
I don't even think I'd pay $40K for one of them. The non-rental company buyers that have Explorers are probably not paying anywhere near sticker.

A new car built by my company leaves somewhere traveling at 60 mph. The exhaust leaks causing the driver to pass out. The car crashes and burns with everyone trapped inside. Now, should we initiate a recall? Take the number of vehicles in the field, A, multiply by the probable rate of failure, B, multiply by the average out-of-court settlement, C. A times B times C equals X. If X is less than the cost of a recall, we don't do one.
