The local newspaper in Baton Rouge requires you to login through Facebook to comment on their articles.

I don’t have Facebook anymore and don’t plan on ever getting back on it. This isn’t the first website I’ve come across that requires Facebook to be able to comment. Why do websites require this? What information/data am I giving up by commenting through Facebook?

I feel like we are living in a police state.

I don't think you understand what a police state is.

Why do you feel the need to comment on a newspaper article?

A lot of the comments are with fake accounts. Create one and comment away.

I used to comment on some of the articles until I quit FB. At least the Business Report lets you create an anonymous account through Disqus. I've absolutely offended enough people with that account to value its anonymity.

Please provide your definition and enlighten me. I’m doubting you understand what it is.

Back in the OLD days (and likely still) a newspaper would not even consider publishing a letter to the editor without a name. I guess this is their way of doing the same and limiting a lot of crap comments.

Just set up a bogus facebook account if you care enough to create this thread.

Probably so if you post some inflammatory or threatening shite they don't want on there they can block you

Ask yourself this: how important is it for you to comment on these articles?

Trying to cut down on trolls/flame wars. They want the comments to be limited to comments people are willing to sign their real names to.

You could create a fake Facebook account, but to sign up you need to create a fake email account for that fake identity and that alone is too much work for most trolls. And if you want it to be untraceable you need a burn phone to create the Yahoo email which you then use to create the fake Facebook account. So now you're into money.

Not important enough for me to be tracked by Facebook or the government.

The local news in Baton Rouge does not reflect the people’s interest. It’s become a thought control exercise. I’ve personally had access to information not available to the public that has been completely distorted or fabricated it the local media. It’s disturbing on many levels that the news can destroy people’s lives without being held accountable.

As far as commenting on articles and being required to use Facebook, I believe it’s to suppress speech or limit speech. It’s also a way for people to personally antagonize others that have different views. It’s beciming unacceptable for anyone having a different view from these radical progressives to be able to speak.

There’s no doubt in my mind that there are government informants and bad actors on this site trying to suppress speech as well.

ESPN.com is the same way. It sucks for me because I don't have FB and I refuse to sign up for another account (I deactivated my account years ago), but I can see how it can be beneficial in at least slowing down all of the troll accounts.

I will not log in to any webpage through FB. FB and Google domination of the internet is the worst thing that has ever happened to freeing of the shackles on mankind's privacy in the history of the world.
