Except for that later obligatory Indiana Jones year with the hat and rope "whip", I went with the hobo stick and bandana in my earlier outfitting efforts. Worked in a pinch, especially in those years where I could sneak away without my parents knowing I was worshipping the Devil when all I thought I was doing was collecting sugar to trade with my pals at school the next day.

I recall those mask hot as shite and breathing was a bitch with your tongue getting slashed up.

Don't forget sweating and coating the inside of the mask with the sweat.

Police, media, etc. warned us back then that bad people would put needles in the treats, but it wasn't really that big of a problem.

I bit into only two needles in all my years of trick or treating.

The mask would always break almost immediately. That cheap elastic holding the mask on your head would break at the slightest touch.

A flimsy arse rubber band and 2 staples - any one of those failed and the mask was permanently ruined.

Were they made in China back then? Rubber band was so thin you could floss your teeth with it.

I remember some hospitals offered free X-rays of Halloween candy in the 80s.

My grandmother had the one that had wood arms and wooden frame but had 6 removable cushions with some type of orange floral print.

We had one like this…

Even had that same coffee table. And I believe the cushions had that exact same print on them. I can remember lining up my Star Wars men on the cushions of the coffee table facing each other and fighting many, battles. The center wooden part was “no-man’s land” between both sides.

We had something similar in our very first home when we got married. It was given to us by an older family member. We were just happy to have a couch to sit on and watch our 12" B&W TV.

We had the fancy color TV with a clicker and the big screen; it was all of 20”!

And next to it was a state of the art sound system…
