Why is it supposed to charge back to just 80%?

you want to keep the batteries as new as possible for as long as possible.

excessive supercharging and charging to 100% constantly will reduce battery life signficantly.

we're still at like 98% battery life after 5 years by sticking with the 80/20 rule as much as possible.

the only thing that sucks is i'm always forgetting to bump it up to 100% before we take a longer trip and only remember about an hour before we leave so it only gets up to like 92% before we have to leave.

i need to remember to bump it to 100% the night before.

it came with it when we bought it. i think its an add-on now which is retarded b/c homelink has been in every car for like 2 decades.

It's so stupid they made it an option. I keep telling my wife to just get it but she's too cheap. The west texas in her comes out sometimes.

we were at 11% and pulled into a supercharger and we were up to 57% in about 7-8 minutes when i pulled the plug since that was plenty to get home on.

It’s the worst thing. It was always 25 minutes for me to charge so I had one installed in my month to month rental??.

It’s not bad if it’s every once in a while but it would suck for any long trips and using it more than once every couple of months.

youve seen my posts on the tech board, i'm afraid i might be on your wife's side here; i probably wouldn't have sprung for the $400 for homelink just on priniciple alone. thats excessive for a damn RF reciever.

this was a random target parking lot and there like 30 charging stations.

at home we only had a 40a circuit available so we charge at 32A and we get maybe 7-10% an hour? i would have to look but its plenty fast to keep it topped off. again, i'm a cheap bastard; i could have had the electrican swap the 40 for a 50 but didn't.

also, kind of random but i learned the charger in our garage has a back-end IP address which i had to get into to change the power panel from 50 to 40. even the electrician didn't know how to change that so i had to figure it out after he left b/c the breaker kept tripping.

eta ping me if you ever have this situation and i'll walk you through changing it. its a bit better than a command-line interface but not by much.

Your obsession with what my wife drives is bizarre. I know it's not as cool as your mom's boyfriend's IROC Camaro.

I’m having a charger installed in my new house November 1st and if I have any problems I’ll reach out.

i kept screenshots; its not hard to change once you know where to look..the password is on the side of the charger (and the charger documentation i think) which you'll need.

if you're connecting to a 50a breaker, you shouldn't have to change anything.

Driving with only one pedal is easy to learn…no brake pad changes ever.

The self driving is improving, the summon to have the car pick you up has as well. The apps like YouTube and games help if you do stop to charge. Almost all superchargers are within walking distance of multiple restaurants / stores.

my biggest question is how does the a/c hold up during the summer?

No issues I’ve noticed. I do dislike the lack of cooled seats. One big advantage it has is the cabin climate control when it’s parked. You can command it to cool off or have it keep the cabin at a certain temp.

1. What is the maintenance like for a Tesla, how often does it need service, what are the costs of service and where do you take it?

Just tire rotations, the occasional cabin air filter (service center can do this), and windshield wiper replacements (tesla ships these direct to you). Discount Tire is the best.

2. Do you plug it in each night at home or only when it gets low (if only driving around city).

Plug it in each night, max 60%. I never use more than 15% per day. On trips, I charge to 100. Just note that if you charge to 100, you shouldn't leave it at 100 for long. Not good for the battery. Charge it and go.

3. If it breaks down on highway/Interstate say on a trip, are there shops around that work on Tesla's to be able to tow to? Or do you need to go to a Tesla Dealership?

It really doesn't break down. It is a large battery and electric motors. If it fails, it will be a big failure requiring towing to the service center (In LA, that is NOLA). Other than that, it is a flat tire. Never had any issues in 3 years of ownership. I keep a spare in my trunk.

4. Any charging station nightmares? How long do you usually have to wait at a charging station if the bays are full?

Never had to wait, but I don't live in California (where it happens regularly). Like others have stated, you will never charge at a supercharger unless you are traveling. Always charge at home - super easy and CHEAP.

5. Did you consider any of the other EV cars or hybrids? Mustang EV (so glad I didn't do that).

The only thing I can contribute is that the highest concentration of Teslas in BR is the Exxon chemical plant parking lot

Follow up question, what is insurance like for cost compared to standard car? Also for the towing service and such, is that part of the insurance or a Tesla service or AAA?

Elon explained the 80/20 thing on a podcast one day. Something like the last 20% takes much longer to charge than the first 80%. I assume that longer charging time beyond 80% is why it may degrade the life of the battery. I don’t have a Tesla.

Can someone explain the brakes and replacing those on a Tesla? Different than a ICE car?
