I used straight will power and faith. It was kinda rough the 1st three months but I followed through and I’m 3 years sober… I have become so strong that even with my wife’s illness and passing I have not even had the first urge…

Yes, that’s a heavy drinker
Only with the "and" and not the "or"

Went to the gym, found different hobbies.
I actually quit drinking cold turkey just after I turned 21. I had been drinking since about 14 and pretty heavily from 18-21 since I was stationed in Germany. Quitting wasn't really that hard. I did it to prove to a dickhead Captain in the Air Force and just stuck with it. Been sober 23 years.

1st, as others have said, I’d strongly advise getting the advise of a physician on it because quitting cold Turkey can be dangerous.
With that said, my experience was I had to go in the hospital for four days with an unrelated matter and couldn’t drink. When I got released, they put me on an antibiotic for another 10 days, so at this point I had two weeks without it.
It became a goal for me to see if I could go a month, and I promised myself I’d buy the CFB 2025 game as a reward if I did.
Tomorrow marks four months of me. Ironically, after playing the game a few times, I haven’t picked it back up in over two month.
At the same time, I also decided to start taking a daily walk. I started with 30 minutes (about 1.6 miles) and have gradually built it up 4 miles which takes me 1:12 - 1:15. I’ve lost 33 lbs in the last four months. I don’t have a specific date when I will start drinking again, but I would like to continue with some more weight loss.
The other thing I’ve done is to try to increase my water intake. Otherwise my diet is unchanged…well, I’ve noticed I do eat a few more jelly beans or other candy.
Again, that’s my story and it may not work for everyone. I would recommend consulting a medical professional.

I love to drink. Effin' love it.
But I quit for long periods of time because I know my body needs a break. I do it largely four ways:
1.) An alternative beverage. No a fake beer, too close. I mean like a flavored sparkling water or something. I just have to be sipping on something and it helps a lot.
2.) Keep busy. When I'm home, I just work on the house. Always something to do if I look hard enough.
3.) Go to bed early. I found I had a high drinking likelihood if I stayed up past my wife watching TV or something.
4.) Smoke pot. When all else fails and I really just want to relax, I'll rip the vape pen. Not for everybody, but helps for me on a stressful work day when the scotch is calling my name.

But if you go the medical route it's forever on your record and that has its own serious consequences over time.
Like what? Ineligible for transplants or cancer trials?

A single glass of wine every day is in no fricking way a "heavy" drinker

Bud Zero tastes authentic, so I'll mix one with a regular beer and get two beers with only one beer alcohol content
Heineken 0.0 is also pretty good. I found it during Lent last year and it could fool me for the real thing

I’d say focusing on the negatives helps me. Nothing motivates me not to drink again more than waking up the next morning of shite sleep and a raging headache. I drink every couple months and I regret it every time. The reward of waking up hydrated and fresh is too damn good.

Never really was addicted to it. I loved to drink socially. Once the opportunities to do that got less frequent as I graduated college, got married, had kids, etc I just don't have the desire anymore. I drink maybe a beer or two a month with a meal.

It an Athletic are the best out there by far IMO.
I just find them too close to the real thing so I don't separate myself from alcohol enough if that makes sense. It's still keeps the habit going. So I prefer sparkling water with a lime or something like that.
Or some herbal tea after dinner instead of bourbon/scotch night cap.
ETA:
I drink in the Fall every weekend so I don't touch it on weekdays. In the Spring and Summer I'll take several weeks off at a time because I'll go on vacations and drink every day for a week. Then there's this two week window in December when it flows pretty good almost daily

I'm approaching 5 years.
The first 2 years are a nightmare.

I think everyone's experience is so different. I haven't found it to be a nightmare at all to be honest. It hasn't always been fun, but instead of whiteknuckling it I did put a lot of work into figuring out why I was drinking and healing some of those wounds. That part was not fun, but had nothing to do with alcohol. So fast forward a bit and its not bad because I can deal with the things I was drowning away before.
But I guess if you are just a heavy drinker just to party for fun, then yea might be a lot more miserable.
