While I can tell the OP and his words have genuine and noble intent, one thing to remember is that they are not always applicable to people who are suffering from mental illness.
These folks tend to get the double whammy of dealing with sad circumstances on top of their condition that they deal with everyday. Remember that this time of year is not only difficult due to the holidays, but the lack of daylight with the shortest day of the year just a few days before Christmas and darkness coming so early.
Sadly, a lot of people - trying to be helpful - will tell folks with mental illness “they just need to….”, as if their condition is a choice or moral failing that can be overcome by sheer strength of will. No one would tell a person with a broken bone “you just need to…” and expect that person to heal.
So, if you have folks you know who are struggling, it can be helpful to give them the pep-talk like the OP, but it may not always work. Sometimes you just need to let folks know they are valued and loved, and you’re available for them if needed.
***just to be 100% clear, the OP clearly intended to be helpful to a general audience, and I’m not critical of him.***

OP's blue Christmas this year revolves around a family member with a serious mental issue who recently decided it was a good idea to sign himself out of his in-patient facility that was treating him on OP's dime and decided to be homeless instead. There's a lot more to the story but that's it in a nutshell. His Christmas is certainly blue, but the blueness spreads to everyone else that loves him.

My sympathy to you in having to deal with that.
