Remember when you can fit 9 kids in the back of a station wagon?

I considered it high-risk to ride up front with my dad, and that's not even counting the camels.

Literally in the blink of an eye.
I'm laying here in intensive care up in Michigan (have been since the 6th when I tried doing a younger man's stupid stunt) thinking about how fast it's all gone by.
A month ago it was the 80th annivesary of the D Day invasion .... forty years earlier I was on the Honor Guard for the 40th Anniversary in Normandy with Ronnie and Maggie, et al. Some of us partied that night with some of the WWII Vets who had made the jump in '44. They seemed so old at the time. It had been forty years since, for them. It's been forty years since for me now.
Yeah .... I remember 1984 like it was yesterday. The music, women, cars, being bullet proof. Dad would send VHS tapes recorded with non stop MTV and Saturday ballgames to me. I'd leave them in the Company Day Room there on post in Vicenza for all the guys to see.
So yeah, I get it ... forty years ago then was as forty years ago now was to us.
It went by really fast.

Van Halen's "Jump" (actually debut Dec 1983 but that's all you heard the first half of 1984)
Oh yes, I remember being sick of hearing that song on the radio

We were supposed to be the Jetson's by 2025 and that hasnt happened. We are a long way from many things we had then and definitely far away from what our parents had. However, internet and smartphones draw a distinct line of differentiation from anything humans were experiencing before they existed and we got to experience a crucial transition in the human experience.

I think the 80's were the peak time for movie sountracks. Do they evn release that anymore? Back then the soundtrack was often just as big as the movie itself.

1984 I was 14 and it was probably the best year of my teenage years. I miss the 80's and wish we could go back. IIRC, hard rock became very popular that year. The movies and music in that time were awesome

American Exceptionalism. The only shred of guilt I possess is the fact I got to be a teenager in the 80’s and my kids have had to experience this dumpster fire timeline for teens.

I think we are closer to a return to the 1850's lifestyle than we are to a extreme advancement beyond what we have now. I don't know if we can advance to a extreme higher level without destroying ourselves. Just think back to the 80's people were so concerned about the cold war and nukes flying between the USA and the Soviet Union when in reality we know now that was never a threat. Look at the world now, it is far more dangerous.
