Common sense may suggest that, but science doesn't confirm it. Further, Mercury in vaccines is included at a safe level IN ONLY A HANDFUL OF VACCINES. It's been removed from almost all of them with the notable exception (amongst others) multi-dose flu vaccines. Do a little research as to what contains mercury and don't get those, if that's what concerns you. Don't use "oh my gosh, there's mercury in there and all mercury at any amount is so so so bad because someone told me it was a 'heavy metal' and even though I'm not really sure what that means, it must be bad."

I don't have a problem with people not vaccinating their kids as long as they're willing to Home School them since they're now a threat to children who used to be protected by "herd immunity".
I feel for the families of kids who medically cannot be vaccinated for various reasons and were previously protected by a population that vaccinated like they were supposed to.

MMR vaccine
I would have a hard time giving my son this one until a cause for the rise in autism is identified.
The risk of autism to protect against measles (mortality rate of 0.3% ), mumps (mortality rate of .04% LINK), or rubella (mortality rate of .05%) is something to consider.
Different considerations should be given for vaccinating boys vs. girls. Boys, for instance, have autism at 4 times the rate of girls. Women are at risk of losing a pregnancy because of rubella.

Higher rates of autism exist since vaccines became popular based on the definition, redefinition, and raised awareness of the word "autism."
There are not higher rates of autism in vaccinated kids vs unvaccinated kids. There are not higher rates of autism in children who have received vaccines with Thiomersal (mercury- containing substance that's since been removed/replaced in almost all vaccines) than other groups, either.

You can request preservative free vaccines.
Also the increase in autism diagnosis has a lot more to do with the development of recognizing the issue with increased education over the years than it does vaccines. There's nothing that says autism is caused by vaccines. Sadly, I think it's more about people trying to grasp for answers when we don't have one.

And because women risk losing pregnancies due to Rubella, we vaccinate everyone against it. Why? Because when the woman whose immune system didn't respond to the vaccine is exposed to a 10 year old who wasn't vaccinated and has contracted the disease, she's now at risk of a disease she would have been protected against had that child been vaccinated.
Also, there is zero evidence that wasn't admittedly forged and retracted suggesting that the MMR vaccine causes autism.

I buy this for the time period of the 80's to the early 2000's. In the last 2 years the rates have gone up 30%. Have the definitions changed that much in the last 2 years?

I mean there's not really any bait to take when the guy says frick it, I'll do it. I think everyone knows he's trolling.
How would a casual scroller not know he didn't mean "well, I do have an anti-vaccine stance but don't really want to say it. Someone else will first I'm sure. No? Hmm..still nobody, I guess maybe I'm the only one in the thread. Aw frick it, I'll just go ahead and be the lone dissenter"

I guess the lesson there would be make sure you understand what you're responding to before you go off on someone obviously playing devil's advocate.

Any chance you have a link? Autism awareness has been huge in the last 10 years or so. I do know how much the DSM-V changed from IV in terms of defining autism, but that is somewhere on the realm of 10 months old now, with some of its info leaking before. I'll hop on an actual computer instead of mobile once I'm done studying and casually posting in this thread with whatever hard definition change has occurred. This 30% rise in diagnoses is very much news to me though.

Calm down Nancy. Humans ingest arsenic and are exposed to radiation daily. It's not like they are putting the baby in a vat of mercury when it exits the womb. Small doses.
But i'll take the history of modern medicine and the elimination of polio, small pox, measles, mumps, whooping cough, and the extermination of other medieval diseases/plagues over the irrationality of fearing a substance that is dangerous in large amounts.

I thought he was trolling, but I've learned never to assume that people making wild statements on either side of the fence of vaccine use/disuse shouldn't be surprising. I know some very intelligent people who have some pretty strong views on vaccines based on media surrounding a single study with forged/doctored/tailored data. I tried to respond level-headed and calmly. I hope my quote didn't seem too mocking in my first reply regarding mercury.

This is a situation where what is best for the herd might not be best for the individual (specifically boys).

This is all well and good, but what causes autism then? Is it a genetic defect? If so, why wasn't autism noticed 50 years ago?

Are you a real live anti-vacc'r?

reports of autism per 1,000

A further study in 2006 concluded that the apparent rise in administrative prevalence was the result of diagnostic substitution, mostly for findings of mental retardation and learning disabilities.[28] "Many of the children now being counted in the autism category would probably have been counted in the mental retardation or learning disabilities categories if they were being labelled 10 years ago instead of today," said researcher Paul Shattuck of the Waisman Center at the University of Wisconsin at Madison, in a statement.[

Nope, as I said earlier my 8 year old has had his shots. Selfishly I'm not affected any more.
Overall I think vaccines have been great. Polio, smallpox, etc were horrible diseases.
The increase in the number of vaccines kids take now vs when I was a kid (I'm 30) is concerning. Are all of these really needed?
For instance, is the mortality rate of MMR worth the possible risks?
