Best: Heidelberg, Germany. Walking out the door of my apartment, turning the corner, and jumping on the Strassenbahn to the Altstadt every weekend was awesome. I had a helluva lot of fun before I became a company commander. What a kick in the dick that was.

Worst: Fort Bliss, TX. Base was really nice, but El Paso sucks.

Best - Del Mar, Camp Pendleton, CA
Worst - various FOB's in the sand box pre occupation - awesome time but conditions sucked arse. Oh well we dealt with it and was a non-factor.

Albany, recruiting. 08-09 until got hot fill to Pax. Really liked Pax, too. Not a bad area but in the middle of nowhere on the Chesapeake.

My Dad 35 years in the Air Force asked my preference ...

Did not hesitate ,, Edwards AFB Mojave Desert ...Marched in the Rose Bowl Parade. Saw Client Eastwood and Sean Connery shooting movies, saw a full scale battleship built in the desert.

Thunderbirds practice every day .....and a lot of weird stuff flying everywhere.

Rocket engine tests.....And best of all ......nobody around. Nearest city was Lancaster 35 miles away.

Was stationed at Camp Pendleton, MARFORRES New Orleans, and Camp Lejeune. Love the area of Pendleton, but it was my first duty station and I was lowing ranking so I was treated like shite. If we are counting TAD/TDY locations, Camp Johnson, NC sucked.

I have driven that stretch from Apple Valley to Bakersfield and you're right...Edwards is in the middle of nowhere. NOTHING else out there except for retired airliners, windmills by the hundreds and a Hyundai test track.

Still, it was cool driving by thinking of the early test pilots being stationed there and drinking at Happy Bottom.

Worst was ft. Polk.
Best was ft. Jackson.
The base in Hohenfels Germany was cool.

I’ve only been to handful though.

Best was by far DLI Monterey Bay. I mean what wasn’t to love. Young single guy. Yes please.

Worst? Tied. Goodfellow AFB in San Angelo TX although I miss Mejor Que Nada fajitas and throwing darts at the Lone Wolf pub.

Also worst? Earackson Air Station. Went TDY there for some maintenance issues. That was a 4 mile Long Island out on the end of the Aluetion chains in Alaska.

We used to go visit my sister in San Angelo when she was going to ASU. I loved Mejor Que Nada.

Shemya, AK. Almost at the end of the Aleutians. Next island over, Attu, was held by the Japs during WWII for a while.

One year remote.

Early ballistic missile launch detection pointed at the USSR. Cobra Dane. They reference it in the movie War Games.

Also had another asset in a hangar they would roll out from time to time.

Believe it was The History Channel that had a show about The Bloody Aleutians, covering the WWII stuff.

They had old pictures on the walls in the hallway leading to the chow hall showing what the WWII folks had to endure out there.

AK didn't become a state until 1959.
