When we lived in NOLA, we went to a play at Tulane with friends. The guy we knew well, his date was just one of many women he dated. After the play we went to The Camellia Grill.

The date had had a stroke and lost most mobility in her right side, especially her right hand.

We were seated, the four of us. We placed our orders and our friend took a bathroom break. The man behind the counter served soft drinks to my husband and me, and then asked the date how she liked her coffee. She told him, and he added two creams and a sugar and stirred it for her. When our friend returned, the counter man asked him how he liked his coffee, he said two sugars, and the counter man fixed his coffee for him, and handed it to him and served our slices of pie.

Neither my husband nor our friend noticed anything. I got a serious frog in my throat because I had never seen that level of service before at Camellia. For the date to have one handed opened a sugar and two creams would have been almost impossible, and the counter guy realized that and deftly did something that nobody noticed.

I've told that story at restaurants across the USA and in northern Europe about how special restaurant workers can be and it holds true today.

For half an hour, one woman could set aside the hassle of living with a stroke, and just enjoy coffee and pie without stress.

That remains, to me, a feel good story.

Must have been pre Katrina. I find service there now kinda sucks.

This is a nice story. There are some on the OT who will shite on it because they can’t be happy with anything that doesn’t involve watching the world burn-

That’s the point though. The waiter noticed the girl had a stroke, and not only made her coffee for her (something normally not done), but also did the same for her date so she wouldn’t feel singled out. A nice gesture that the server didn’t call any attention to, and in fact deliberately hid for her sake.

to that dude.
