Flying in dreams?

I've always had a couple of dreams each year when I 'fly', usually at some random point in the dream. It's never similar to Superman's flying but is like I'm treading water in the air. This came up in conversation with a co-worker and their dream flying was similar to mine.
For those that have had this feeling in dreams, just curious if it's like Superman, treading water like me, or something else?
Also interesting how our brains can completely make up all of the weird stuff in dreams yet also make it seem as though everything is unexpected. Like we are consciously reacting to things as though we don't know what's going on.

I've had similar, and it's more of like a low gravity thing usually. Like I can jump and just kind of float but controlled.

I usually glide after a running start. I do it over people and watch their reaction. Flying is fun.

Usually I start off flying really well. Superman style.
Then I gradually get worse and worse at it as dream me starts thinking about how the hell I'm flying, til it devolves into being just really good at jumping. Then I wake up.

The theory is that this particular kind of flying (the jumping and kind of a controlled gliding) is a representation of you trying to get over or work through something.
Not all dreams mean something though.

I’ve had those. It mainly feels like a gravity depleted jump.

Yeah, that sounds like another way to say what I'm experiencing. My parents have a big oak tree at their house and sometimes my 'flying' is jumping up and then treading water/air to get up to another branch, then another, etc. Then sometimes I will realize that I'm too high up and get nervous that I'm going to fall.

Find this edition of OMNI magazine April 1987. I read and practiced the techniques in the article to much success for years. I still use one of the techniques discussed therein to fall asleep quicker.
"Tonight, I Fly!" was one of the topics and it's amazing how well it worked to gain more control.

As a matter of fact, I had a "tread water" flying dream last night.
I can jump up pretty high, maybe 35-40 feet, then I can kind of swim almost, although I am always falling. I can do a little jolt to get some more altitude and keep it going, or even go streamlined to build speed at the expense of falling faster.
It's really weird.

I have dreams all the time where I don't necessarily fly...but I hover like there's no gravity and have zero control. So I'm just floating around trying to grab something. It's pretty unnerving.

Is it basically telling you how to have lucid dreams? I've always wanted to do that.

Seems a little strange that the 'flying' feeling of treading water is similar for most people (based on responses), even though Superman flying would be the more common thought of flying.

I've had them my entire life. I have the ability to escape danger. It seems so natural. Some my favorite dreams.

It’s the same reason you always suck at fighting in dreams. Your brain is used to feeling momentum, gravity, and other physical haptic feedback when moving. When you sleep, your brain isn’t getting that feedback, so it gets confused and explains the sensation by: “oh, I must be weightless or have jello arms,” etc.
