Seven South Carolina law enforcement officers have been shot, one fatally, and a suspect has been taken into custody according to officials.

Just before 5 p.m., Florence County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Chief Glenn Kirby said three sheriff’s deputies and two city of Florence police officers have been shot during an active shooting incident, WXTL reported.

Florence County Coroner Keith von Lutcken reported one of the officers died, according to WBTW, which reported another person other than the law enforcement officers was shot. “The city of Florence mourns tonight for the loss of one of our own,” Florence Mayor Stephen Wukela said at a news conference.

The coroner confirmed it was a Florence city police that died, according to the Associated Press.

From a picture on the WPDE link it looks like the incident occurred at 932 Ashton Drive. If you look at Google maps there's a toy cop car sitting in the front yard. I find that pretty eerie

That's nuts. Must've been an ambush type scenario when they were walking up to serve the warrant.

That's basically it. From what the sheriff said he had the high ground either through an upstairs window or the attic

So this was all over a warrant? I wonder what the warrant was for? What, in his mind, was that bad, that he decided to shoot at police?

Word is they were serving a warrant in a child porn investigation, conflicting reports on subject being adult (20's) aged son of the homeowners or the husband (homeowner)

Odd that not much confirmed information is out yet. May the fallen officer rest in peace and the injured officers recover quickly from the damage this thug pos has created

That must be the 20 year old that's wounded and in the hospital.

Deputies have identified the alleged shooter who opened fire Wednesday on law enforcement officers in Florence County, killing one officer and injuring several others, according to Deputy Chief Glenn Kirby with the Florence County Sheriff’s Office.

Kirby identified the suspect as 74-year-old Fred Hopkins who lived at the home on Ashton Drive where the incident occurred. Hopkins suffered a head injury and was taken to a local hospital for treatment. Law enforcement officials are unable to speak with the suspect at this time due to multiple health issues, Kirby says.

According to court records, Hopkins was charged with disorderly conduct in 2017, but the case was disposed of a few weeks later. Public records also show Hopkins used to be a lawyer, but has been disbarred since 1984.

Florence County EMS spokesperson Billy Hatchell confirms twelve patients were transported to two local trauma centers, seven police officers and five civilians.

quote:

Of the seven police officers transported, five were taken to McLeod Medical Center and two were transported to Carolinas Hospital Systems. Four of the five civilians were also transported to Carolinas Hospital Systems, while the other was taken to McLeod Medical Center, Hatchell says.

According to NBC News, two of the three injured deputies were said to be in critical condition and the third, who was shot in the leg, was in stable condition. Congressman Tom Rice says all three Florence County deputies are women.

Of the three surviving police officers, one suffered a graze wound to his head and was paralyzed on one side. Another officer was in stable condition, and a third, shot in the thumb, was released from the hospital, officials told NBC News.
