A fine summer day at the beach on Long Island.
GROK: what did people see when Flight 800 exploded

TWA Flight 800 (a Boeing 747) exploded and broke apart in mid-air on July 17, 1996, shortly after takeoff from JFK Airport, while climbing over the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Long Island, New York. All 230 people on board died. The event occurred in clear weather around 8:31 PM local time, at about 13,700 feet altitude.

What Eyewitnesses Reported SeeingHundreds of people on the ground (along the Long Island shore, in boats, or nearby areas), as well as some pilots in the air, witnessed the event. The FBI interviewed over 700 potential eyewitnesses, and the NTSB analyzed 736 accounts. Key common observations included:A bright streak or "flare-like" object: Many described a rising or ascending streak of light (often white, orange, yellow, or red), resembling a flare, firework, Roman candle, shooting star, or rocket. It sometimes had a smoke trail and appeared to move upward from the ocean surface or horizon before culminating in an explosion. Some saw it as a fast-moving point of light or glowing trail that zig-zagged or arced.

Initial explosion and fireball(s): The streak often ended with a bright white flash or explosion at the plane's altitude, followed shortly by a large orange/red fireball (or two separate fireballs). Witnesses described the fireball splitting into two or more descending fiery chunks or columns, with burning debris raining down into the ocean. Some heard rumbling or explosion sounds afterward (sound travels slower than light).

Descent of wreckage: After the main fireball, people saw large flaming pieces or trails falling toward the water, creating multiple fireballs or smoky trails. Most witnesses farther away only saw the descending fireballs and debris, not the initial streak.

Specific examples from accounts:A yacht club patron saw what looked like a boat flare ascend, expand into a larger fireball, then split into two smoky trails dropping to the ocean.
Others saw a red dot or flare-like object moving parallel to the horizon before it grew and exploded into multiple falling fireballs.
Pilots in nearby aircraft (e.g., Eastwind Airlines Flight 507) radioed about seeing an explosion ahead, describing fireballs descending into the water.

Around 258 witnesses mentioned a "streak of light." Of those who specified its origin, most (roughly 96 out of 102 in one early analysis) said it started from the surface or horizon, while a few said from the air. Not all streaks were described as rising vertically; some appeared more horizontal or descending.

Also, we landed on the moon.

I had a lot of family out near the location at the time. It wasn't a mass hallucination. How far would government go if something that was military top secret was involved, for example, air defense launched from a submarine?

This is a side note for anyone interested, the live mechanical bull riding is back live, its all women riding on it.
Now back to the topic. I don't remember this.

A major problem with a lot of conspiracy theories is their reliance on eyewitness testimony. Eyewitness testimony is very unreliable, generally, and this becomes a bigger issue with something fantastical, which is usually the type of scenario that leads to the conspiracy theory.

Even if it was a top secret military exercise, one would think the fallout from saying OOPSIE, wouldn't be that terrible. We Americans have swallowed way bigger shite burgers.

Mass hallucination by hundreds on the beaches, fishing and flying on a beautiful clear summer day must have been caused by DC swamp gas!
But government would never lie, coverup or blow smoke up our arse...

Yeah, you can't believe the firefighter who ran out the tower before it collapsed saying they heard constant explosions. What do those jabronis know?

Only thing would be nuclear secrets. As in someone on board got a hold of a suit case nuke plan or some such and Jack Bauer wasn’t able to get them before boarding the flight. Then yeah, I can see us reach out and touch a commercial airliner with a scud.

kind of immaterial, he's right, eyewitness testimony is one of the most, if not the most unreliable evidence/testimony there is, and in this case would easily lend itself to conspiracy theory and would make the conspiracists skeptical of any rebuttal, from any agency that disagreed with their theory

Two of the hundreds:
The most prominent military-experienced pilots who directly witnessed the explosion of TWA Flight 800 (a Boeing 747 that crashed on July 17, 1996, shortly after takeoff from JFK Airport, killing all 230 on board) were two New York Air National Guard helicopter pilots flying an HH-60G Pave Hawk.
Meyer reported seeing a streak of light moving in a gentle descending arc for approximately 3–5 seconds, followed by a "hard explosion"
Captain Christian "Chris" Baur (Co-Pilot)Background: Also a New York Air National Guard helicopter pilot (same HH-60 crew, call sign "Jolly 14").
What he witnessed: Baur similarly reported seeing a streak of light moving east to west prior to the initial explosion. He and Meyer provided consistent accounts of the sequence. Baur reportedly told officials immediately after the event that he thought he saw a missile.
Role: The pair conducted search-and-rescue efforts over the crash site that night.

The toothless masses yes, are the worst. But...when you have knowledgeable people who know what they are looking at, or are incredibly trustworthy (Commander David Fravor)...at some point you have to take it seriously. You can't just Mick West it away any more.
