It's like the Seinfeld episode where Jerry tried to give George free Super Bowl tickets and gets rebuffed. Whenever we get invited to an out of state wedding, I always tell my wife that the invitation is basically a bill.

George: So in order to use these, I gotta spend like fifteen hundred bucks. You're basically handing me a bill for fifteen hundred dollars.

As far as groom "paying" more well yeah I mean it's his wedding after all. And let's be honest it's usually mommy and daddy paying the bill.
