Most of these injuries occur when the first explosive is a dude, and fails to send the firework into the air. That second explosive then mangles your hand.

We used to have bottle rocket wars, running around shirtless on sweltering July nights. Great fun.

No doubt. But duds are dangerous too.

Yes that is what they say, you go to look too see " what went wrong" and BOOM there goes your arm or there go your eyeballs. I am not a doc but I work used to work in hospitals it is absurdly tragic.

The risk of fatality or life-long maiming is what makes it fun.

My cousin's little girl sustained 1st degree burns to her face arms and torso on the 4th in Lafayette when a firework malfunctioned and started firing horizontally. She was sitting on a porch very far away, with headphones on. I think she'll be ok, but it was pretty bad, had to have surgery.

but we grow up
One gray night it happened, Jackie Paper came no more
And Puff, that mighty dragon, he ceased his fearless roar.

His head was bent in sorrow, green scales fell like rain
Puff no longer went to play along the cherry lane
Without his lifelong friend, Puff could not be brave
So Puff, that mighty dragon, sadly slipped into his cave.

Fireworks blamed for 10 injuries, including amputation, in Palm Beach County

Many of those incidents involved fireworks that were misused, malfunctioned or tipped over.

A 14-year-old boy died after suffering a fireworks injury on July 4, according to his family.

Jacksyn Smith was injured on July 4 while mishandling fireworks.

Yep, let's blame the fireworks.

Sure malfunctions, and accidents do happen. But I suspect majority of these injuries & deaths happen when they are misused or not properly set-up (resulting in tipping over or exploding somewhere other than the sky).

I had a friend that lived a couple of blocks away from the railroad tracks that passed through Brusly. For a couple of summers his older brother worked at a fireworks stand and would come home with a shitload of bottle rockets and other fun things. We would go down to the tracks at night and wait for the train to come through and shoot bottle rockets at it. It was fun if there was an open boxcar that was empty.

Ah, those were fun times.

It's not the fireworks that are the problem. It's the people.

Humans like controlled danger. More news at 10. Next we can talk about why humans like guns and roller coasters.

Most injuries are from alcohol mixed with fireworks and fireworks mixed with stupidity.

The vast majority of people can light a firework as it’s designed, back up, and enjoy the show with minimal risk.
