Firefighters suspended for transporting toddler instead of waiting for ambulance

Volunteer firefighter Capt. James Kelley stood on the side of the highway in Stafford County, cradling the limp, blue body of an 18-month-old girl whose father had called 911 minutes earlier to report she was having a seizure in the car.
Kelley, who had been first to arrive on the scene, had a decision to make: Wait an unknown amount of time for medics? Or load the unresponsive toddler into the back of the fire truck and take her to the hospital himself?
Kelley’s choice — to transport the girl in the backseat of the fire truck— has won him the gratitude of the toddler’s family and the praise of colleagues, but has also led Stafford County officials to suspend him and another volunteer firefighter in Fredericksburg.
Kelley, a D.C. firefighter who also spends his free time as a member of the Falmouth Volunteer Fire Department in Fredericksburg, said he was aware of rules that prohibit using a fire truck to transport someone in medical need, but decided to disregard them in this case.
“I feel comfortable with the decision,” Kelley said Sunday.

This guy saved a child's life and this is how the county thanks him.

Can't imagine a better-feeling suspension.
ETA: For the firefighter, not the consumers of this news.

Rules are rules, but he might have done the right thing. Or the wrong thing if the child's injuries were worsened by his decision. Tough call.
If it were my child and life or death, I want the firefighter to do that they could to save the child's life.

Dude is a hero. If that had been my little girl he'd saved I'd make damn sure he never paid for another beer in his life.

That sucks but he'll be able to retire early once his gofundme racks up.

Well perhaps a provision of if it is the right call, no suspension.
I know I know.. not practical and they don't want to encourage this.. but geez.. just seems so wrong. You can't just sit there and always wait.

Falmouth Volunteer Fire Department
so, what exactly happens when you are suspended from a non paying job?

Kelley considered the medics’ potential response time, given the unclear location description. He also considered that it would take him three minutes to get to the closest hospital.
“It was a no-brainer,” he said.
I tend to be on his side, but I don't get one thing:
quote:Why not call to get an ETA just before leaving? Maybe he did, but I'd assume that would be added to the article, if so.
On the way, Kelley said he asked the closest responding ambulance to report its exact location. “Southbound on Route 1,” the medic replied. That description was vague, Kelley said.

Is a stupid mantra. Common sense exists for a reason... but in general people are too fricking retarded to use it.

That's an interesting perspective coming from a highly decorated naval officer. Do you feel the same way about orders?

Different article:
quote:
Kelley said he thought it might be at least 10 minutes before anyone else arrived, so he chose to take the girl to the hospital himself.
While driving there, Kelley said he asked for the location of the nearest ambulance twice, but never got a straight answer.

He saved that girl's life.

Very courageous of him, I hope his suspension is lifted and he doesn't lose his job of saving a child's life.

That decision is directly the result of lawyers. It should be at their discretion. I understand that moving someone with a broken neck could injure them further, but moving someone who is having a seizure for unknown reasons should be a reason to let that slide.
I'd bet the fireman is completely happy with his decision, and would do the same thing in the same situation if it happened again. Hopefully he's on paid suspension and can hit up the beach or something

Here's a better question, with those type of rules in place what's the point of the fire department responding to these type of calls?

Chad, I don't know if I've ever told you, but you're a very intelligent guy.

In the submarine community if someone is given an idiotic order (one they know could frick something up and/or harm someone) they are encouraged to challenge it.
Suspending two VOLUNTEERS at an understaffed fire dept for doing what they thought was necessary to save a life is asinine. So not only are you sending out a message to other volunteer fire fighters that they better follow the "rules" even if it means someone might die... you're also spreading the remaining volunteers even thinner which could jeopardize the surrounding community.
Real fricking brilliant decision makers.

I didn't know that about the naval hierarchy. Very interesting.
