A Connecticut man has been arrested on suspicion of abducting and sexually assaulted 12-year-old girl after DNA from cigarette butts linked him to the crime. Police from Webster, Massachusetts, arrested Joshua Besaw, 35, of Thompson, Connecticut, at his home on Wednesday morning after a two-month investigation. The arrest came after DNA traces from cigarette butts he dropped, gathered by detectives tailing him, matched a sample taken from the victim.

The department called in the FBI to help in the case, and Besaw was put under surveillance. Detectives 'were able to survey Besaw and retrieve used cigarettes that were able to be tested for DNA,' the police department said. Besaw allegedly kidnapped the girl from the May Street Park in Webster on May 31 2019, after luring her into his car. Court documents said he told the girl, who had cycled to the park to meet a friend, that his name was Chuck and that he needed help because his girlfriend's parents hated him. Besaw drove the girl over the state line into Connecticut and took her to a wooded area, telling her he had a gun. 'If I paid you $800, would you kiss me?' he allegedly asked the victim, who told plice she tried to fight him off. After the sexual assault, Besaw said: 'At least I didn't rape you so be grateful for that.' He dropped the girl off in Dudley, Massaschusetts, from where she was able to call her parents.
