Shadowbox fence has both good sides.

Tell him you don't need a fence. If he wants it fixed, fix it.

If it’s his fence, he pays. Part of my fence is fricked up. I’m not gonna ask my neighbor to help pay for it. You know why? It’s my fence. Duh. I chose the style, height, etc. without any input from my neighbor. You know why? It’s my fence. See the pattern here?

This is the way.
Splitting costs with a neighbor can get dicey if that neighbor is a douche or moves out and the new neighbors are douchey.
If they want a fence, that's on them. If you want a fence, that's on you. Anything else is asking for eventual trouble.
We lost most of our fence due to Ida, asking neighbors to chip in on it has never even been a consideration.

Where I live there are not any houses behind us yet and it is made clear that the homeowners are responsible for the back fence and the side that is to the east. So this would be easily settled if your neighborhood had that kind of set up but it isn’t always so simple. Not sure what happens when houses eventually go behind and we share the back fence.

Split it.
My neighbor and I were looking at doing this before lumber became so expensive.

It is my understanding that one is responsible when the “ugly side” faces you. However, when it’s in between homes, I’m in favor of splitting the cost. Both homeowners are benefiting.

I honestly wouldn’t give AF.
I don’t need a fence so why exactly would i give a shite to put one back up?

Technically you're right but the fence benefits both of you.

When I built my privacy fence I put it 12” on my side of the property line (got it surveyed first). There is a big enough gap under the fence to stick a pump sprayer wand to spray Roundup.
I didn’t want to split costs with neighbors because neighbors move. Someone new might be a dick if the fence blew down and not want to help pay.

The neighbor can claim the fence on his insurance and get another 50% from you for that section of fence. Sounds like a win win for him

If you do want to be a good neighbor. Cost of new section of fence minus insurance money divided by 2.

I’ve got a neighbor in my back yard that has a fence on a portion of my yard. It actually goes across my property line in one section. I’ve been wanting to tell them to move it

Only one person can/should own a fence. The fence isn’t on 2 properties, it’s on one. The neighborly things to do is to recognize the fence is yours (your neighbor, not you) and NOT ask a neighbor to pay for something on your property. Splitting fences is idiotic and always leads to issues. If it’s your fence, pay for it.

The one who owns the fence it is a douche for even suggesting the other neighbor help pay for it. The non-owner can offer to help pay or help fix but he’s not being unneighborly by not doing so.
I don’t expect my neighbor to help pay for my damaged fence and I won’t think any less of him. I will politely refuse any offer to help pay or help fix. It’s MY fence and MY responsibility.
