I think I address this earlier in this post, but I struggle to find any real benefit to using stereotypes. It certainly doesn't ease my mind if I'm involved in a near-miss or an accident with an Asian female that there exists a stereotype for that situation.

I think this is usually true, especially in the context of this thread. Stereotypes used to insult someone or vent aren't beneficial. But stereotypes in the form of say, an instinct relating to personal safety might be another matter. But then I'm not sure they can be entirely separated. Exercising some self control and acknowledging that it's just poor conduct to mutter about a stereotype in traffic obviously wouldn't mean you have to make a conscious effort to dispel the same stereotype if you think it's based in fact (subject to my previous caveat about acknowledging it is a stereotype and thus not ultimately reliable).

I think this is probably true, but I also think that couching casual racism as something everyone participates in, which is the notion that I was originally responding to, does a real disservice to how non-racist the US actually is. There are still some structural issues that appear directly related to city design choices made in the post-war era, but race relations in the US are significantly better than most other places in the world. It beggars belief that if such casual racism exists, as implied, that it would manifest so rarely, relatively speaking.

Even though I know in theory that people talk like this, I'm still surprised at how trashy/racist people can be. And now he's famous and we get to point and laugh at him.

Even if the driver almost hit his dog, he could’ve yelled at and insulted the driver in other ways that didn’t have to be racist. Could’ve told the guy he drives worse than a woman

What I think is what you have is an already angry person, likely entitled, and who looks down on others...you have that ramped up by 1000 because he thinks this guy was in the wrong for hitting his dog. He's probably cussing and foaming at the mouth already at the driver.

Then the driver likely comes back at him with something racial. Kicking the confrontation down that road. So then the guy starts giving the racism back in the worst way when the camera comes on and he's now too pissed off to control himself and goes off on his racist little tirade using the verboten words!

But if the guy was middle eastern, or Indian, or oriental, Hispanic...the result would have been the same. He would have attacked with the barbs he felt would do the most damage.

Eh I think this is potentially a big reach

The only reason I tend to be suspect on stuff like that is because of the filming, but it's more and more common for people to try and film encounters to protect themselves, so the idea he "baited" him probably isn't as likely as it would have been 5 years ago.

I could be wrong. But my take is that whoever pissed this guy off, regardless of race, was gonna get unloaded on. It just happened to be a black guy.

Seems like a byproduct of a desire to humanize racial animosity that may be present in a situation.

“They gonna put you back in chains”.

Actual racial animosity.

Because there was a comment earlier suggesting such.

But you think it's more likely this idiot just randomly decided to blow up at some guy.

Just like you can't seem to grasp that not all things are equal and things don't happen in vacuums.

I haven't seen anyone saying this guy was in the right, despite your protestations.

But, big picture, there's almost always some other part of the altercation that isn't recorded in these scenarios. And him mentioning the dog shows that.

None of that justifies your own insane, baseless psychoanalysis. Go write a poem that rhymes, you weird toad.

Since the entire event is not recorded, you don't know whether the driver said something along the lines of "hey, white trash, keep your dog on a leash." From his tone and demeanor, the driver did not seem like he'd be the kind of person who would do that (but, he also knew it was being taped so he would be on his best behavior).

I have resolved and refereed a lot of racial disputes. In most cases (even with a recording), you never have the full story until it is investigated.

I agree with the poster who suggested that this guy was likely trying to give out the best barb that he knew to give - and it was racist.

Our UPS, FedEx and post office carriers are all black and they are great guys.

Guy had his unleashed dog almost get hit and decides to go on a racist rant to the driver.

There's nothing to defend, and we've stretched this to 8 pages because some posters got pre butthurt about potential reactions from the usuals.

Racism = bad

A bunch of communists wanting people locked up because of racist speech? That’s bad too. All they are trying to do is establish a precedent for locking people up in a country with free speech.

I just want people to be a little bit smarter

this is about as clear cut as it gets but our resident gay poem writing edge lord still has to do these mental gymnastics to defend it. Interesting

The problem with you is you declare "I have never ever ever once had any thought that could be deemed racist and anyone who has ever had one is the worst racist ever!"

Meanwhile, I fully acknowledge people have prejudices, racist thoughts, racial actions, etc.

I think it's more important to understand the why behind why people act like they do. It find it's much more productive to understand why someone has this outburst and address those root causes than just scream "racism! Destroy them" and act like it will do anything to help the issue.

Hell, look at the black guy who has the collection of klan robes, willing given to him by former members, after they changed their ways.

Because he was willing to ask why and get to the root and show them the error of their ways.
