FedEx Smartpost - worst service in shipping I have ever had

I apologize in advance for the long text - but wanted to warn people about using this service. Anyone who has used it can likely relate
I ordered a hat online and the only shipping option was FedEx Smartpost - so I chose that. That was Thursday of last week. I don't recall if the shipping option said FedEx SmartPost or just FedEx. Now I have never had any issues with FedEx or UPS or any of those guys, but I have had many, many issues with the USPS. My tracking number has been showing all along that this package would likely be delivered Tuesday August 16th (on the FedEx tracking website). As recent as yesterday morning it said it was out for delivery on Tuesday. Usually if this is the case I can expect the package on my doorstep when I get home, or it is delivered by 8pm the same night. I came home and didn't see a package. I went online and checked my tracking and it said "Delivery Exception - Unable to deliver - please contact local post office to pick up or reschedule delivery." I saw that it said post office, but I called FedEx first, since they were the shipping company that gave me the tracking number. The lady on the phone said that the Post Office was delivering it and that I would need to contact them. This was obviously confusing - given that I never got a USPS tracking number. I called the Post Office number and of course it is automated and reaching a representative is near impossible, so I left my number and they are supposed to call me back.
I called FedEx back and went through the same routine, but this time I asked what the USPS has to do with a package that was being delivered by FedEx. I doublechecked by shipping e-mail to verify that there was no USPS tracking number. The lady on the phone said "oh you need to add the numbers 92 to the beginning of the FedEx tracking number for the Post Office to help you." This was the first I had heard this and it is not on their website. I tried not to be short with her but I asked her how I was supposed to know to add the random numbers 9 and 2 to the beginning of my tracking number and she really didn't have an answer. The post office website is saying to look at the notice left by the delivery person on my door. No such notice exists - not on my door, not in my mail box, not on the ground by my door not in the bushes or anything, the notice does not exist.
I have since researched this a bit and it turns out that FedEx Smartpost is some horseshite business relationship between FedEx and the USPS that helps shippers in saving money, not entirely sure by what means at this point. Either way, I can't get in touch with the post office yet and the automated voice said it would be about 15 minutes. This was an hour ago.
Any of y'all been burned by FedEx Smartpost? Tips?
TL;DR - Do not use FedEx Smartpost to ship or order items - it is worth the extra couple of bucks to use a service with a good reputation. I can't locate a package i ordered.

A quick Google search for FedEx Smartpost reveals a number of websites providing information about the service. One such result is a Reddit thread about adding 92 to the tracking number. Sounds like you need to learn how to use Google.

I don't patronize businesses that use it anymore. It takes a week to get something when it could take 2 days using the regular mail

Kind of a red flag about your service when key information about getting your packages has to be found on reddit. Why don't all businesses just do that? Don't worry about posting useful info on your own website, just let reddit users do it.
That is fricking misguided and dumb.
Also, did your quick google search reveal the countless topics about how shitty this service is?

You chose the cheapest option available to mankind and are shocked it sucks?
It switches fricking carriers. What do you expect?
I think their logo is actually a fricking snail. It is the lowest priority. Don't get pissed, smartpost is exactly what it bills.

You must have missed where I said there were no other shipping options. And I had never heard of Smartpost before, I have always just had regular FedEx shipping on my items.

So what is the big deal.... It is a hat.

Not a big deal, just a recap of my experience and a word of caution for those who don't know any better. It's a sketchy service and not reliable.

Tracking service definitely sucks. I've lost two packages with them.

I don't know wtf it's called but where I work we have no postal delivery. Everything comes in FedEx or UPS. Sometimes we'll order shite and it shows as shipping FedEx... no problem. Until we find out that FedEx dropped it off at the local post office about 2 miles from work who will not deliver to us. We end up having to go over there and pick it up before they send the shite back.

Yeah I'm sure... You sound absolutely pleasant to deal with

Thanks for the PSA. Never heard of it, but if the USPS gets involved in the shipping it has potential to get fricking up. I will say my Amazon deliveries that have been handled by USPS have been pretty consistent though.

I have had a similar experience. Ordered from either fanatics, or fans edge, dont remember which one. A simple shirt. Delivery said 4-6 days. Tracking on website kept saying the same thing, and would update each day after that to the next day. The package routed to a town about 120 miles west of me. Went to a town ~250 miles east of me. Then south of me, and finally to me. Ended up taking over two weeks. Will never make that mistake again.

Coming from you, that comment holds a ton of weight.

USPS is the fastest but loses the most packages.
Smartpost and the equivalent UPS service give you the worst of both worlds. UPS/Fedex speed and USPS reliability.
