I didn't realize how young they all were.

Might have to open a rye whiskey tonight for the occasion. Sad day.

Tonight is the annual Winter Dance Party at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, Iowa.

Here is Dion's recollections of the Winter Dance Party Tour.
He may be the last survivor of the entire tour.
Sad, I was driving through Clear Lake and swung through the McDonalds and asked the girl at the window where the Buddy Holly crash site was. Complete blank stare. Not a clue. The only event that anyone would know Clear Lake, Iowa for, made movies about it and everything, and she's clueless 30 years after the fact. Oh well.

Holly was getting to be pretty influential at the time. The Hollies took their name from him, the Stones opening song for their first US tour was “Not Fade Away.”

The 1st time I went on The Geraldo Riveria Talk Show in 1991 they filmed a show before us called "The Day the Music Died."
I was able to meet Buddy Holly's wife, Peggy Sue, Donna (Richie Valens), and Little Richard!
Pretty cool for your 1st trip to NYC! Also so the Yankees vs White Sox and Jackie Mason on Broadway.

Seems like I remember reading that he had survivor's guilt for a long time after the crash.
quote:
Holly decided to charter a plane for himself, guitarist Tommy Allsup and Jennings so they could fly to Fargo, North Dakota, instead of taking the long, frozen bus trip. Richardson, who was suffering from the flu, asked Jennings for his seat on the plane, and Valens asked the same of Allsup. When Jennings told Holly that he was going to take the bus, Holly jokingly told him he hoped the bus broke down, to which Jennings replied, “I hope your ol’ plane crashes.”

I would think that is something that was on his mind until the day he died. He was alive simply because he picked the correct side of a coin flip. Im sure he went through the rest of his life asking a lot of "what ifs".
