I will undergo 17 hours of physiological torture for $900,000. I've done a lot more for a lot less.

It is not remotely the same if you know it will end. You would have to believe you killed your father, they were going to kill your dog and you were facing a open and shut murder case.

And what will likely be lost in all of this is that, had his father actually been the victim of a robbery gone wrong, etc, there’s a very decent chance he would have been convicted.

We have a criminal legal system, not a criminal justice system.

All those thinking, that wouldn't ever happen to me, have never been in the situation. Trained interrogators manipulate exhausted, stressed, mentally fragile people, into confessions daily.

I had the pleasure of a 3 day stay in a simulated POW camp for training. I was sleep deprived, hungry, beaten, etc and interrogated multiple times. It's no fun. Folks who are masters at their trade can have you tripping over your words easily.
while I agree with this, the simple solution is to plead the 5th and lawyer up.

The police aren't your friends. They're agents of the state and should be treated as such. Never talk to the police.

1. most non-criminals don't do that

2. if you have a missing loved one and had nothing to do with any crime associated with it people naturally want to be as cooperative as possible It is a double edged sword when you are looking for the police to actually help you

Just read another article that says they didn’t even read him his Miranda rights until after the 17 hours of interrogation, when they took him to the hospital for the psych hold.

This happened in 2018 and apparently 3 of the involved officers are still with the department while the fourth is retired. I would think this is malfeasance at a minimum based on everything being reported. Unreal.
