A key ingredient in many over-the-counter cold and allergy medications called phenylephrine doesn’t work to get rid of nasal congestion, a Food and Drug Administration advisory panel concluded Tuesday.
quote:
Phenylephrine gained popularity in the early 2000s as a replacement for pseudoephedrine, the decongestant used in Sudafed, which was moved behind the pharmacy counter in 2006 in an attempt to curb its misuse as an ingredient to make methamphetamine.
Were from the government and were here to help.

Goddamn, the university research team proved that phenylephrine doesn't work any better than a placebo, and still you guys persist.
So I should ignore my real-world experience in favor of a university research team who, just now, came to the conclusion that phenylephrine does nothing? Okay, sure.
quote:
You're just like the blockheads which thought phenylephrine could be used to create meth, and that's why it's being pulled.
Uh, nah. That ain't me.

quote:
The news outlet notes that the researchers previously pressed the FDA to remove phenylephrine products back in 2007 but the agency rebuffed them.

FDA doin work on behalf of the citizens. As usual.
You being facetious or are you confused?

Wonder is phenylephrine could be a therapeutic for the next pandemic?
Posted on 9/12/23 at 3:55 pm to John88
Pseudoephedrine + Prednisone
= OTC cocaine
= OTC cocaine

And the nasal sprays if used too much can damage your nose similar to cocaine use

Trust government and the medical community.

The unanimous vote, which specifically declared oral formulations of phenylephrine ineffective
My go to for daytime relief when I have colds is Mucinex-D.
The active ingredients are guaifenesin and pseudoephedrine (which is phenylephrine).
I hope the FDA doesn't pull phenylephrine form OTC.

They are not the same thing

The panel’s vote reflects damning evidence provided by the FDA that found that when phenylephrine is taken orally,
This does not apply to the nose spray.

I had to look it up. You're right. Pseudoephedrine is missing the little OH group on the benzene ring versus phenylephrine.

Well no shite. It ain’t the real Sudafed.

This is true however phenylephrine works for many including myself. It isn't as strong as pseudoephedrine and why I will recommend it to folks that can't tolerate the stronger effects. Its also preferred in some because it doesn't send blood pressure up as much. Whatever, I guess. I'll still recommend it to certain patients regardless of what the FDA states.
How about the actual research that says it doesn’t work?

Phenylpropanolamine worked great with fewer side effects than ephedrine or pse. It was banned because a handful of people with silent heart conditions died over a 20 year period from taking it.

You’ve read the research?
I thought I read that roughly 10% actually makes it to the nasal area. Maybe that’s all some need to feel relief?
