When my kids were little they didn’t get baby food. I thought it was weird. I would cook normal veggies, smash them up and feed them that. None of that weird cereal stuff either.

Same thinking with our dog. He gets raw meat.

What's an affordable dog food brand you recommend?

I've found Iams to be a solid option - kind of expensive at my grocery store but online its not bad - about $1.00 per 1b if you get the larger sizes.

ETA: I have a nearly 11 year old german shepherd - about 90bs (healthy weight, he has a big frame) who really doesn't look his age. Fur doesn't glisten quite as much as when he was younger and can't go for as long or as hard as he used to (maybe he just doesn't want to anymore). He has started to wake up a little stiff some mornings, but stretches it out quick enough and no big hip problems or anything like that you see in their breed sometimes.

I remember a few years ago getting blasted on here for feeding my dogs Dog Chow and Ole Roy instead of Blue Buffalo

F Blue Buffalo. I switched my dog to it a couple months ago and it made him puke blood and he wouldn't eat for a week. Switched back to Nutro, perfectly happy and healthy.

Proplan has been around for a long time and, imo stood the test of time. It has also proven that it also is not immune to problems as there was a recall like 4 years ago. Overall its track record is good though.

Wellness brand seems to be good

As mentioned above, there are specific diets within the brands listed that aren't linked to this issue. There are def brands on the list that I have recommended to folks in the past.

Lots of questions still to be answered on this so I don't have all the answers. Just providing what is currently known.

With the release of this article, my vet probably just sent me an office visit bill. Go figure the expensive shite they were peddling didn't work.

I fed mine Canadai for several years until I switched to a grain free Victor and both of my dogs do very well on the Victor Hero. I switched to Victor due to convenience of availability.

Im actually a bit curious if this has a lot to do with people who pay more for inbred dogs than the food itself. If you are buying expensive food, you are more likely to buy a bred dog and a lot of bred dogs in the southern part of the country are inbred.

I had a finicky lab that would turn up his nose at most foods. But he loved Ol Roy.

Are you saying your vet was actually selling some of the listed brands? I doubt it.

Also, if you complain about every little charge your vet probably doesn't want to see you any more than you want to pay him.

Well, we feed our dog Merrick. Looks like we are switching. What’s the best nongrain free food to feed them?

I feed my lab Pure Balance because it reduces dog farts.

Our lab died of DCM last year, he was on Hill's Science Diet, but our vet was adamant to not switch him to one of these "healthier" options to exacerbate the situation.

When they did the x-ray and confirmed DCM, their first question was what food was he on.

What is your opinion of Wellness Core Rawrev grain free wild game recipe? We have been feeding our husky this for about a year and now I’m a little worried and wonder if we should make a change.

I feed my dog the 4 Health Puppy food. It is not grain free so I guess I don't need to be worried about this?

As was mentioned before--it isn't the brand at issue nor the quality of their ingredients ...these are good - of dog food but it's the grain-free VARIETY of that brand at issue. I used Fromm grain-free but have now switched to their Fromm Gold variety which is not grain free. My vet said they still don't know why the formulas with peas/legumes are killing dogs. The taurine deficiency alone isn't the sole problem because like someone else mentioned, some of the dogs with the DCM had normal taurine levels.

My dog has many issues with skin allergies/ear infections and she did much better on the grain free diet. But it's not worth it if that will kill her so she's back on regular formula.

It is heartbreaking what's happening to these dogs. I hope they figure it out soon. Meanwhile I wish the FDA would force the companies to stop selling the grain free varieties!! Some people still don't know about this!
