Good news here.

Currently available tests are designed to find fragments of viral genes indicating an ongoing infection. Doctors swab the nose and throat, and amplify any genetic material from the virus found there.

The new test, by contrast, looks for protective antibodies in a finger prick of blood. It tells doctors whether a patient has ever been exposed to the virus and now may have some immunity.

That is important for several reasons. People with immunity might be able to venture safely from their homes and help shore up the work force. It may be particularly important for doctors and nurses to know whether they have antibodies.

So reading these things causes my add to come out.

My only question is is it specific to covid 19 and not other coronaviruses?

ETA OR does it even matter??

If I have to go to a doctor's office to get the antibody test then count me out.

So if you haven’t gotten it, you stay quarantined until you catch it anyways. Irony

I’m going to expose my ignorance of medical science here. How can they come up with an antibody test so quickly, while successful treatments seem to take so much longer?

I would assume so, otherwise it's pretty useless.

My dad thinks they will come up with a speed test for this and have drive up lab locations.

Will see I guess.

Thinking the same. Some doctor took an antibody test and put it on Twitter. He had antibodies but he posed the question of was it this strain or some other strain of antibodies.

I skimmed the article but I didn’t find it clear about this.

What we need:

Nationwide antibody testing with those testing positive getting government issued wristbands

What we'll get:

Mayhem

My guess is this isn't based on any treatment. Just like the covid19 test which can tell if you have the virus, the antibody test can tell you if your body produced the antibodies that fought off the virus.

Also, this is massive news. If they can scale this quickly, it dramatically decreases the timetable for nationwide quarantine.

It's a lot easier to test if something is there than it is to actually genetically engineer something to fight it off safely. Safely being the key word.

If this shutdown lasts for a couple more months, mayhem may happen anyway. I think the biggest issue with it, is many people will get desprate and go seek out the virus so they can get over it and get back to living 'normal'. That and many people will fake their results (wristbands, etc) which will cause some issues b/c they'll end up getting it and walking around unprotected like an arse.

I'd be happy with the 'recovered' folks going about their life and when things open up, the rest of us take precautions like wearing a mask, etc.
