The early F14 squadrons had some of the most beautiful paint schemes ever put on warplanes. Though I understand why they did it, it was a shame when they all went back to the traditional gray paint.

This is tough. Probably the A-10 or Apache. I like ground support stuff.
Hard to vote against the F22 though. It's such an incredible piece of engineering.

Vintage- P-47 The Jug had it all, size,speed and power plus an unbelievable ability to take punishment and still bring it's pilot home.
Y2K-era- The A-10 for the same reason as above, plus the devastation that GAU-8 gun can put on the target.
Honorable mention- F-15C Great plane to work on, pilots absolutely love it and what can you say....undefeated in all aerial combat situations the world over.
All-time- Until the F-22 ever actually proves itself in combat I'll go with the SR-71,. Had to do an unscheduled inspection on one in England back in '89.
Got to meet with one of the original seven design engineers on the SR-71. Without a doubt the most brilliant human being I have ever been in the room with. Prior to our inspection he gave us a tour of the plane (except the cockpit, of course)
Terrific guy who told us some great stories about it and we loved every second of it.
One thing I CAN repeat is that when they originally designed the airframe all the models showed a lifespan on the airframe of roughly 12-15 flights before significant structural weakening would occur.
In real life they found out that the flight profile flown on most missions actually heat-treated the airframe and made it stronger, giving the airframe nearly an indefinite lifespan.

I loved making models of these when I was a kid, such a cool looking plane. Crazy to think they were flying in the 60's.

Saw a Blackbird pilot telling a great story about the film guys realizing they had stills of Russian jets stalling & falling trying to intercept the spy plane.

that's why this plane is legendary. it's capabilities were beyond what even the designers envisioned. the damn thing is like a mythical creature.

What's nuts is that thing was designed in the (I think) 50's primarily.
That thing was designed on paper by some extremely smart men. Today's engineers aren't worthy of washing those guy's socks.
