Trump letting Fauci be the face of the US Government response to Covid is one of the worst mistakes he's ever made.

Ranks right up there with letting Jared fricking Kushner run his reelection campaign.

poor, naive child..

this will require an immediate set of ambitious and progressive economic measures, and further decisive action to address the larger macro-economic shock from this outbreak.

Theyre coming after large parts of the economy.

It conditions people to do what the government tells them to do in the name of safety, and also doubles as a way to shame people who don't comply.

That’s a tiny part. You artificially kill the economy to make the people dependent on a government that now has the opening for a significant power grab, in brief.

Progressives have stated this is a big part of the goal, to take over more of the economy.

frick that.

You wanna keep wearing one because you choose to - fine.

But frick continuing to force everyone to wear one after a vaccine has been released and through a large number of Americans.

I actually think there’s something to this line of thinking (I think people in power probe the boundaries of what they can get away with), but I don’t think it’s binary (government mandate=secret nefarious scheme).

The scientists today are in such a shitty position, but they chose correctly. If they took the stance that we should let it ride, and COVID turned out to be Spanish Flu Part 2, we wipe out the whole fricking planet. And they would have been eaten alive. Instead, they erred (and continue to err) on the side of caution, and they’re pummeled in public by a bunch of amateur conspiracy theorists, claiming based on zero evidence that this is really just a global conspiracy to turn us all into slaves. The answer is probably in the middle (scientists want us to be safe, and some sinister politicians want to leverage that).

What do you think we should do? Nothing?

Here's the deal, stop letting doctors decide policy for 360 million people who are in various degrees of risk with blanket policy, and include "experts" in other fields that are affected by their ideas. You know, like economics, psychiatry, sociology, finance...

Progressives.

In between two extremes you'll find common ground. I know, weird.

Here is one of the progressive heroes during the pandemic

quote:

“…re-energize the kind of personal, moral commitment of Americans” on coronavirus “that we need right now to get people to start wearing masks at home, reconsider their dinner plans at Thanksgiving, save ourselves”.

Uhh, that argument might have held with our initial response back in March, but we now know that COVID has limited risk for the vast majority of society and these bastards won't admit that or revise strategy.

That’s not a bad idea in a vacuum, and there’s something to the argument that doctors (like climate scientists) are only looking at the issue through their own lens. But do you really want the money guys making the counter-argument when the stakes are literally extinction? We fricking lucked out that this wasn’t a bubonic plague or Spanish Flu because those happened in a pre-airplane world. Either of those comes today, and we’re fricking done. Quickly.

This isn’t an easy thing. I get the shutdowns are ruining economies and the social distancing guidelines are wreaking havoc on people’s psyche. Mine included. There’s a high cost associated with any move. But erring on the side of caution when you’re dealing with dozens of new and irregular variables (each with catastrophic potential) shouldn’t be considered wrong. We lucked out this time, and the scientists don’t have the benefit of hindsight.

Blanket shutdowns are intellectually lazy. It's simply a politician stating he or she is too dumb to develop an intelligent strategy that hits hard where it's needed, and let communities assess their own threats and deal accordingly.
