Had one in the house a month or so ago here in KY. I thought it was a hummingbird at first. I should have taken a picture but I googled it and it sure matched what the Asian hornet looked like to me.

have heard several stories of kids dying in Vang Vieng while doing ziplines, bungee jumps, and especially the river tubing.
Don’t forget the recent story about the Australian (or British ?) women out partying in Laos who drank contaminated liquor and died .
Look, I realize life is full of risks .. getting out of bed in the morning can be dangerous .. and while ive lived in neighboring countries to Laos, ive never actually been there.. my understanding is that the healthcare there is not nearly on par w/SE Asian countries like Vietnam Thailand Malaysia et al.. so ill never advise anyone to wrap urself in bubble wrap and stay inside .. but maybe do your adventuring in places with the type of infrastructure and healthcare to take care of your sorry arse if shite goes sideways .. all that said, this seems like an incredibly unlucky fluke type of accident deal, rip

I stepped on a yellowjacket nest in the ground. Good times.
I can top that. Mowing gras with lawn tractor when a teen. Rolled over nest of those little bastards. Jumped off the mower and ran. Still got me.
Or
Stepping on a cicada killer while walking barefoot in the yard, which I never did again.

My old apartment complex had wooden staircases with flat slats on the underside essentially forming a space for wasps, etc. to nest. One day walking up I guess I stepped on the wrong step and reverberated the sound and one came out and stung me right in the face. Pretty sure it was a yellow jacket not wasp.

Yeah accidents can happen of course. Laos can be amazing but it’s better for seasoned travelers I believe. But more and more people are going there and the country isn’t prepared for it yet. Healthcare in parts of Thailand or Vietnam rival the USA but Laos is a different story.

An American father and son have died after reportedly being stung by a swarm of hornets while ziplining in Laos.
Were they Chinese or Japanese hornets?

He did know southeast Asia. It's not as if he were from New England and a total stranger from the area. (He was from Idaho Falls, Idaho)
