So, he wasn't licensed or certified to fly that plane? I may not be using the proper terms.

This shows the plane was owned by Savant Aviation LLC.

According to FAA website no one with the last name of savant has a helicopter license. This makes it even worse. a-hole without a license killed his family and put others at risk as well.

I'm baffled by this. Totally baffled by why he would have done this.

It's fortunate no one on the ground was injured or killed. He ended up on a rural road which makes me wonder if he was trying to land.

I also saw that he has a married daughter with 2 young children apparently from a previous relationship/marriage.

I remember from my time flying in helicopters offshore there are very specific rules, licenses and certifications required for commercial helicopter pilots to fly with passengers after dark

Pretty sure that military, LEO, medical etc have special exemptions and ratings that allow night flights

I know the authorities are looking closely at the pilot of the helicopter that crashed recently in houston after striking the tower in the dark.

Flight aware track - flight path from LC direct lines then that hook at the end? That may indicate issues and possibly trying to set it down.

Gotta be pretty affluent if they own a chopper

There’s an ob/gyn here that has an R22. Helipad in his back yard in the middle of time.

I’m sure he enjoys it.

Dr Chip Lahaye in Lafayette has been flying his own helicopter for years

Did they go to Pat's IN Henderson or in Lake Charles?

Honestly, I had been assuming it was Henderson given they took a helicopter, but flight aware says otherwise. So many bad decisions were made

Like if someone who lives on a lake and wants to go eat at the marina. Boat ride might take 15 minutes longer than a car ride, but they want to go on the boat...

A boat ride across a lake isn't orders of magnitude more dangerous than a car ride. Also, in a thunderstorm, taking the boat is also dumb.

That's what makes this even more tragic. If he wasn't licensed, I can't grasp taking his family on that copter in the dark. It was a little late to be coming back with an almost 2 year old as well. So much doesn't make good sense.

There is a good chance he just passed his checkride and it hasn’t shown up in the registry yet. Takes 60-90 days sometimes. It also appears he bought the helicopter last December.
It is so frustrating. Rich guy buys an aircraft with a license that barely has dry ink and takes his whole family up in questionable weather at night and gets them all killed. Happens too often. Such a waste

A relative posted on his FB page that rode with him on the day he got his “single certification” whatever that is, assuming it exists.

Robinson R 44 is a half million dollars. I guess that is not expensive.

Does that include the seat warmers and remote start?

“single certification”

That either means solo endorsement (still not legal for passengers) or single engine certificate.

To me that suggests CFIT (controlled flight into terrain)

Spatial disorientation happens FAST. Slow spirals into the ground are very common. I wonder what altitude he was cruising. Guessing below the shelf of the TRSA

Assuming the airspace is Class G. VFR weather minimums for Class G at night are 3mi visibility, 1000’ ceiling. Weather data shows 10mi vis ceiling 5500

They were my wives cousins from Indian Village. Terribly sad situation, the two year old baby was named after her great grandfather. Good people.
