Before I got a Rx for omeprazole, such issues were treated with chugs of Maalox or Pepcid chewable.
Maalox is like pouring water on the fire. The Pepcid kicks in pretty fast for a chewable.

Although not a long term solution, 3 sips of Coke or Coke Zero has knocked out any heartburn I've ever had. Hot or cold, as long as it still has fizz.
