re: Family & Aging: what age did you start to feel the pressure of time?

They are the main reason we've stayed in LA.
My mom drug my dad from LA to STL, MO, to look after her parents (who are mid 80's and still travel constantly, but mom lost two sisters, so guilt to "take care of family"). My father hates it there. I feel sorry for him.

Most of them argue that they'll have kids to take care of them when they're older. The reality is that maybe half or fewer will actually do it, and mostly out of a sense of obligation.
You'll never know the joy of a child. They are nice to you and building you up out of pity.

That’s what they tell you to make you feel better about your sad lonely life with no family

Just because you don't procreate and don't get married doesn't mean you don't have a SO. Nothing sad and lonely about being a DINK and not married.

My parents are divorced. Mom remarried so she has a husband to help her but she's not in great health.
My dad is single, in fairly good health and financially well off but lives alone and wouldn't have anyone to check in on him. I guess he could always pay someone to do it if we weren't around.
The kicker is my in laws who are in bad health, don't have a lot of money and live 7 hrs from us. They have nobody to take care of them. I'm not sure how that's going to play out.

my mother is 86 and refuses to wear her hearing aid...you have to get right in front of her so she can lip read or make like Garrett Morris doing the news for the hard of hearing...
I'm 66 and looking at aging more in an academic fashion at this point...however I know that the clock is running and I'd better do the things I want to do now and not put it off until tomorrow...

I don't really think feeling pressure has any correlation to age. In my opinion it can be completely circumstantial.
I started feeling pressure immediately after buying a house. I was suddenly locked in to a monthly payment and any arising repairs to my property.
Later, this pressure was compounded when my mothers health deteriorated until her death. She had dementia and eventually fell and broke her hip. Her health quickly declined and she passed away.
My father and his declining health followed after a few years. My siblings and I are currently looking after him more and more. He is a 97 year old WWII vet and stubbornly wants to live alone. We are doing everything we can to make sure his wishes are fulfilled, but his safety is first and foremost.
It's hell getting old, but better than the alternative.

Hey butchybaby, in context of this thread, I was suprised at the age of our posting population on the OT. No offense intended. I post pretty blindly, don't keep up with anything personal, but you saying 66 (the famous Route is calling your name
) and hearing about fishfighter's ailments bring it home more than the family I don't talk to...

My mom is still the same. She hasn't slowed down or changed at all.
In other hands, I really see my dad starting to slow down.
When I was growing up, he was the go-go-go-work-work-work type. And really a hard arse on me. He and his older brother are the same type.
My cousins and I always talked about all the shite our dads put us through growing up. But his older brother is slowing down alot too.
But now, esp since my son was born, hes slowed down alot. Hes more calmer and peaceful. And he treats my son a hell of alot different than he treated me. He's even talking about retiring in a few years. Which I just cant accept that happening.
My grandparents are still the same. Grandma is still normal, and my grandpa lol, hes at that age where hes like F it, imma sit in this chair all day and watch the news, and let my grandma do whatever she wants.

Yeah, nobody happily married with kids is "jealous" of your lonely sojourns to Europe or anywhere else.

Has this happened to you? About what age? What did you do to keep it from making you feel a bit down? Time is a relentless SOB...
I first started to notice this when I was about 40, so my parents would have been in their lower 60's. They are about 75 now and I think of this almost every day. I really make an effort to go to visit when I can, as I know they won't be there forever.

Well this didn’t turn into a depressing Saturday night.

My dad was always active and we played golf together regularly. Just in the last year, I've noticed him really slowing down and on the rare occasion when we golf together, he can't follow the ball anymore. He turned 77 this year.

I'm likely not jealous of his flavor of the month either.

My dad passed away when I was 51, I'm 58 now. It was the hardest thing I have ever had to do. I still have moments when that kick in the gut hits me again. Not sure if I will ever get over that. Anyway, when he passed it left me as the oldest male in our family. That is when I realized time will kill you and better make the most of it. I used to be somewhat of a s.o.b. Not anymore. Slowed way down, don't get upset over small stuff, and love on my family as hard and as often as I can.

Some of us have long-term, non-married relationships, moron.

My parents are both in pretty poor health, I don’t know what I’ll do without them, just scares the hell out of me. They had me late, I’m 28 and my dad is 72
