I was with the current misses for ten years before I popped the question.

Can you beat that?

A couple that I went to HS with have been dating since the 10th grade. They've lived together since they were 18 and still do but aren't married. 24-25 years

What were you saying about defensive contemptuousness?

If you don't want kids and aren't religious, what is the point of signing a monetary legal contract to someone?

Y.A. I'm saying you're a dick

Taxes. Community property maybe. Probably depends on the state

Yeah, in a state without income tax...

And the new standard deduction.

ETA - Community property is a big reason to NOT get married

Cause they are not afraid of commitment.

nursie, I love you, but you can commit without involving the government.

ETA - And I have been the minister at several weddings.

But society will never take your commitment as seriously as a legally married couple.

Neither will a hospital. You legally are not next of kin.

That's honestly what it came down to for me and the wife. Our legal system is set up to make it much easier for long term financial planning if you're married to your SO.

Well, that and her dad giving me the stink eye the past few years when we visited.

I am well aware, as I was involved with someone...nvm. I am ok with those chances and I dgaf about society's acceptance of me.

I started noticing it when I turned around 45. It's when you realize there just isn't enough time in the day to do everything that you want to do.

my dad just hit 65. He's in great shape (was an LSU cross country runner and pole vaulter, rides his bike 100 miles a week still) but I've noticed him slow down the past few years. He's spending less time outside working on stuff and fishing and more time inside on the phone with whatever customer service will give his complaints an ear.

When I turned 5 and started going to school. I knew it was all downhill from there.
