went outside to double check and there are no pipes running to it at all. Just a big box on the exterior wall.

Did you open that big box? There should be 2 water lines in there. One to supply the heater and one from the heater to the faucets. Wrap both with pipe insulation (or towel, etc...) after thawing. You can also turn your hot water on in the house low enough to have water flowing but not high enough to activate the water heater.

If you take the cover off the water heater, you'll notice the water line coming into and out of the burner unit is not insulated. I learned this the same way during the snow event in BR a couple years ago. Wrap that line with some insulation and you'll be good to go.

also don't know why you need to heat HOT water?

Tankless, it’s just a water heater

Tank, your are heating water that is already hot to keep it hot. Hence, hot water heater.

Should have power going to it. Mine is a breaker. Just turn breaker off for 10 minutes. Mine worked fine after doing this.

Mine is obviously frozen this morning, no water comes out when I turn on just the hot water. Cold is running fine. My guess is my intake line is frozen. About to go pull the cover and look. No idea how I'm going to defrost it though

We had to defrost our yesterday. We put a hair dryer in the box and left it running with the box closed. Inside, we left the hot water taps open even if no/little water was running. After approximately 1 hour, the water heater kicked in and all taps started running full stream and a few minutes later we had hot water from all.

This seems like a terrible idea.

Even in Louisiana.

There are two options, apparently, outside or in the attic. I don't care for the idea of having water above my head, and I don't care for the idea of my hot water source being outside. Can I have a third option?

run your dishwasher or washing machine on a hot water use setting. open up a hot water faucet somewhere a drip setting. if it has low pressure, it means ift i likely starting to freeze. flowing water is much less likely to freeze.
