I never purchase them - you just pay monthly instead of at one time for repair. By time they add it to note, you could just move up to a vehicle with a warranty. $500 pay with $100 for warranty is $600 note. Just move up in years and cost and get one with warranty for $600.

I have an alpha warranty. 6 year unlimited mileage about 3500$ (really). In the first 9 months I had a water pump and an engine control module go out. I know warranties are supposed to be a waste of money but this one has nearly paid for itself already.

Probably the biggest markup at the dealership.

I bought a factory Honda extended warranty from a remote dealership 20 years ago for about 25% of what my dealer wanted for it.

The remote dealer was just going for volume and everyone on this particular car's website/forum purchased it.

If they could make money at 25% of the asking price, you know it's a ridiculous markup.

Same for all the warranties they try to sell you at Best Buy, etc.

We got my son the "platinum" extended warranty through GMC when we bought him a used 2018 Chevy Colorado with 88k miles on it.

We spent $3,000 in the first year on shite they would not cover because they said it was "wear and tear".... not sure how tire pressure sensors, a fuel line leak and a water pump going out are all wear and tear.

No plans to ever buy an EW again. feels like we got royally fricked

That's because you did.

There are so many exclusions, and it’s clear that these companies aren't in the business of making things easy for consumers. They seem more focused on finding ways to avoid paying out than actually helping when you need it.

Always buy one through a dealership. Stay away from Carshield and Endurance. Most of the ones at the dealership, the dealers own a piece of the company. At the end of the day, they actually have a say in if a claim is covered, which is always great for the customer.

Bought two EW for used vehicles. One for a GMC Yukon, the other for a Chevy Avalanche. They were around 1200 ea. Both paid for themselves. Wife bought one for her Camry, and only used it for a new gas cap. Tried to talk her out of it because it's a Toyota, I lost.

Next time buy a Honda or Toyota (excluding 22 and later Tundras) and you don't have to worry about it. I bet the hell out of my 2012 Tundra, have 230k on it, change the oil maybe every 10k miles (many times well over that), drive 85+ on the interstate and it will rides like new. I plan on keeping it for at least another three years.

Stay far away from telephone solicitors and Car Sh**** or the major tv advertisers.
Look for exclusionary coverage not stated component coverage. You want a list of what is not covered, rather than what is. Ask about consequential damage as well. Also, look for a limit of liability equal to the value of the car.
There are many good administrators as well as not as good. Companies such as Warranty Solutions, NAC, North American Car Care, etc. are solid. Look at dealerships for a source. After sale service contracts are not their focus and the f&i department often needs the penetration numbers to hit objectives, therefore after sales service contracts are lagniappe and not something they are using for profit.

Tell him to buy a Toyota next time, and he won't need an extended warranty.

In the meantime, tell him learn how to fix his shite.

That just means you paid for the first $3500 in repair work up front with interest, if included in financing. 9 months on a new car would have been covered by even the shittiest new car warranty and most manufacturer certified pre-owned.
