What is a Krewe?

The shitshow that is MG is entertaining to read about, but I'm curious how it all works. Like who builds/owns the floats and such. Have seen Krewe mentioned several times.

It’s a group of drunks that party for a few weekends out of the year, culminating in a parade.

Beads work up here as well.

Skin to win.

Are they set up as companies or something, or is it just random groups of people?

How do you join one?

It's another way of saying "club." The Krewe of Bacchus, the Krewe of Endymion.

Next time you're in NOLA pay a visit to Mardi Gras World. It's a fun experience and it explains a lot.

Some by application, others by invitation. It’s really a woman’s thing tbh

Just as you would join any other social club. You ask to join and pay some money. Some are more difficult to join than others.

You get invited to join by friends, acquaintances or work colleagues. Some like Momus and Comus and Proteus you practically have to have been born into as the old money families have been involved in it for over a century.

I've been here for a couple years now and just this year learned that krewe was an actual thing and not a made up slang term

Depends on the krewe.

Some require you to be from a blue blood family. Others are open as long as you can afford to pay the bill.

There's no such thing as a krewe. They're legitimate businessmen.

It’s sorta like a drug street gang but without the charm...

Some of them do, some don’t. Blaine Kern owns a bunch of floats and tractors that he then rents to various Krewes.

A Krewe (crew) is usually a membership organization.

Some krewes can be an organization that holds an annual ball, an organization that has both a parade and ball.. There are krewes that just put on parades. There are smaller krewes that just might have a float in a parade.

There are tailgating krewes that tailgate for LSU sporting events (mainly football). Not sure if there is any type of membership with those, but its usually made up of people who all tailgate together.
