You and nurse tried to chastise me in the Bubble thread about the potential of exposing my in-laws. The potential doesn’t suddenly go away just because the government tells me it’s okay for him to go back to school. In fact, it gets WORSE when we open things back up and he’s back in school. Am I just supposed to keep my son away from his grandparents until they die out of fear???

Politicians reacted to the worst possible case scenario. That's no way to govern.
I can't agree with you there. I am optimistic we'll be able to open up soon, but shutting down was the prudent thing to do, imo.

Aren't the graphs better because of the distancing? Wasn't the purpose of distancing to make those earlier graphs wrong?
No, those graphs took distancing into consideration.

Oh, I get it.
It's just a little disheartening to see.
Just remember that there are likely few people looking at models and are even capable of processing the data and forming their own conclusions.

There was no plan. No consistency. No criteria with the shutdown. It was just an escalation of cancellations with more and more stringent rules. That’s not leadership. It’s knee jerking for fear of not being re-elected.

To be fair, everybody and his brother has been saying this since the get-go.

In limited areas, possibly. Across the board? No

I don't disagree with that. But that's government in a nutshell. That's why that government is best which governs least.

Regardless of where you fall on if what the state did was reasonable, this is good news.
Also, do we go from where we are now to ok'ing groups of 10+, then 30+ or just go all the way at once?

how about just as long as it takes for them to find a good, agreed upon treatment? Is that too long for you not to go on play dates?
Do you understand what a novel virus is? Do you also agree that pretty much everyone says that it is "highly contagious"?

Not sure if government trusted the wrong data or doubted the hospital system could ramp up like it did.
There is some level between complete lockdown and doing nothing. Too bad no one in charge thought to come up with that plan.
Now we will move on to the after effects where people will hold to their beliefs that everything was done right.

Exactly why it was the prudent thing to do.
Look, its glaringly obvious that you aren't 100% informed on what a novel virus is.
There are things that you can't plan for, and to shut it down is the prudent thing to do until you know what you are dealing with and how to deal with it

quote:I imagine the experts had an idea as well. But again, they have to collect the data and use that in their models. They can't go on their gut, their instincts, or their opinion as it relates to modeling.
Why did I know (and a bunch of others) five days before the experts? I'm talking to NOLA area ICU doctors three days ago, and they are telling me it's already peaked.
People have to understand what models are and quit taking them as gospel predictions about future events. They are inexact models based on available data. We know our data set is incomplete.

Jesus s Christ man, we aren't talking about play dates, we are talking about people's businesses that they've put their lives into.
Are you incapable of critiquing blanket policy and understanding that government mandates may have been overkill in much of the country.

We all know that would have went over like a lead balloon in America.
So, we would have shut down NY, LA, San Fran, Oregon, Seattle, Chicago and NOLA? What do all of those places have in common?

quote:Like swine flu? And I don’t think you know what “contagious” means. The virus spreads like just about any other. It’s no more or less contagious than the flu or a cold. The issue is having it without symptoms. That doesn’t make it any more or less contagious. Just that it’s more likely for someone to spread it using our typical approach of staying away from others while showing symptoms of being sick. You know that won’t change once they let our kids back in school right?
