experiences with Lexapro - good/bad?

I know we just had a thread recently about one of the Lexapro alternatives (I can’t think of the name).
I was prescribed Lexapro for persistent and severe anxiety, but my problem is that I’m actually anxious about taking it to the point that it’s been four months since I met with the doctor and I still haven’t taken it. When I look up the side effects (particularly when you stop taking it) and weight gain (I’ve always been thin and don’t want to put on weight now) it just seems like something I might not want to get involved with.
Does anyone have any experience with taking Lexapro and dealing with any of these issues? Are there any alternatives to SSRIs? I even talked to my doctor about this, but he felt strongly that Lexapro (at 20 mgs, which seems high) is the appropriate medicine for me.

High dose. Strange he doesn't want to titrate you up given your hesitation.
That said, people react differently.
No harm in trying it out then tapering off if it's not for you.

So you're anxious about taking a drug that was prescribed for anxiety?
Sorry but

I don’t know anything about Lexapro.
Hope this helps.

I took it and could not reach orgasm. Stopped taking it and could. I would rather not impact that part of my life.

Too high to start. Split 10mg per day for a month +. Increase to 20 gradually after. Acclimate and you'll have a much better go of it.

I have an appt today to look into depression remedies. Was this a challenge or an impossibility? Big factor for me as well.

My wife takes Lexapro and it helps.
People who have never been close to someone with anxiety issues won’t understabd where you are coming from but what you are describing is a real issue.
Anxiety doesn’t listen to reason. So others who say you are being irrational just don’t understand your issue.
My advice to my wife and to you us to be 100% honest with your doctor. He can’t fix a problem that he doesn’t know exists. If your hesitant about the dosage, talk to the doc and figure out a plan that you are comfortable with.

I would take something else. Just do a web search for Lexapro and orgasm. Coming off of Lexapro is a SOB too. You will get "brain zaps."

I took it for a few years in the mid 2000's. I was always able to reach orgasm, but it took me a while. Felt like a porn star. I call that a positive side effect.

Had a doctor prescribe me Lexapro about 15 years ago. I could not have an orgasm. Everything worked fine just could not finish. Stopped taking it and sex went back to normal. I've never taken anxiety meds since. I noticed another poster had the same issue so probably a common side effect. frick that.

I have high anxiety too and do NOT take any benzos. Yes, they do help but they can do long term damage and you can really screw things up if you are not careful. Get on Sun-theanine. It will help.

I was on anxiety meds due to my stutter and my doc at the time was convinced it was due to high anxiety. He also said I had a form of Tourette Syndrome. He put me on Lexapro which made my stutter much worse and sex life changed. I stopped taking and it all went back to normal. My wife said it changed my personality too but I didn't notice that.

Do it.
Agree on starting at 10mg. I take 20mg and have for about eight years. It changed my life.
I had the exact same reservations as you. I didn't want to "need" medicine to get my head right. But I was having panic attacks and general anxiety already, and Deepwater Horizon put me over the edge. I was catastrophizing everything and it really affected my quality of life.
As much as it helps me, I was among those who had side effects. Weight has been an issue but initially it was severe insomnia (Ambien got me through that). Eventually, insomnia went away, and now I can't even remember what I was like as a constant worrier.

Jesus man just take it.

Watch what you eat and excercise. Both help with anxiety too.

Trust your doctor. I went through 3-4 different ones before finding Lexapro to be the best.
I never had these orgasm issues people keep saying either.

I am on 10mg as well. Has made a world of a difference BUT it will make you gain weight pretty quickly.

Your dick won't get hard. Why I stopped taking it
