New York (CNN Business)Spirit and Frontier Airlines on Monday announced a $6.6 billion merger, a combination of low-fare carriers that would create America's fifth-largest airline.

The companies have yet to say what brand they'll fly under or who would lead management of the new airline. The combined company would offer more than 1,000 daily flights to over 145 destinations.

The merged carrier would leapfrog JetBlue (JBLU) and Alaska Air (ALK) in the number of miles flown by paying passengers, according to 2021 statistics, putting them behind the four major airlines that control about 80% of the nation's air traffic -- American (AAL), Delta (DAL), United (UAL) and Southwest Airlines (LUV).

Well Frontier Spirit seems like an obvious name.

Should be good news for MSY. Spirit has really grown at MSY, and this has lead to other airlines dropping prices and adding routes.

Hopefully this leads to additional flights out west.

Taking the two worst airlines and making a bigger worser airline. Sounds like a solid plan.

Pretty much.

When I had business classes in school, one of the case studies we were looking at around that time was HP and how they were merging with Compaq.

My professor pointed out in the early stages of the merger that this was likely a horrible idea because taking two middling or worse companies and merging them tends to create far more problems than it fixes.

It comes down to how the cost savings are invested.

If they are just given to the shareholders, then you won't fix anything.

If they are invested in new tech and development, it can work well.
