I remember my first job out of college I would travel a lot to various training courses, conferences, etc. For whatever reason there one three day class I didn't go to one time and just stayed home like using three free vacation days. I guess my boss was busy and I was traveling so much at the time that he never noticed an expense report was never submitted for that trip. Yes, looking back that was prob a really stupid move.

We fired a guy recently where I work now that would actually go on the planned work trips and just use them as free vacations. He'd never even go to the meetings, conference, etc he was there for. Got caught doing this multiple times.

Any other experiences? Result of actions?

I had a conference in DC a couple years ago. I went to the lectures, but made a pretty nice vacation out of it on the company dime. Only came about $200 out of pocket for 4 nights and id a lot of fun things and ate at good places.

I know a lawyer who wrote off a European trip by going to the Spanish colonial archives in Seville to do a title search.

Sure. If it's a nice place, I'll even try to bring the wife for a quick vacation.

But I still go to (most of) my sessions and do the necessary networking. I find there is still plenty of time to kill.

The few times I have gone on work trips I've found time to do some fun personal stuff, but I've always gone to the work related events as well.

I travel for work fairly frequently. I'll do my best to stack meetings in the morning so I can enjoy the rest of my day and night exploring the city. As long as my stuff gets done, I don't see the harm in that.

Now, claiming you're going on a trip and just staying home is just plain dumb.

Conferences are a different animal. I'll bail on the non-mandatory stuff like the cocktail hour all the time, as well as lectures/talks that do not pertain to me at all. Who cares, conferences are generally pointless.

Always, but I usually do some of the stuff I was supposed to do.

Use to go to St. Croix all the time for work. I would leave on a Friday and use Saturday and Sunday as a mini vacation. It was a very easy trip. It sucked going to back to work with a hang-over, the rest of the week I was there.

I thought all conferences/national meetings of xyz organization was just an excuse to drink, network, and go to some of the courses/lectures that you find interesting.

I think the point of the thread was not doing fun stuff on a work trip and still working but bailing on the work portion and using the time as a vacation.

...and what were the repercussions or excuse of never getting caught.

I've traveled quite a bit for work, but always attended my classes/meetings, and just had fun in the evenings. I actually really enjoy traveling for work.

A few people in my wife's class took days off of school and "went to their national conference in Orlando", but actually went to Disney World/hung out by the pool instead. None of her professors found out.

I do this all the time. A few weeks ago I had a training class in Portland and went the weekend before and visited with a friend of mine.

Several years ago I had a week-long meeting in Cali and flew out the week before with some friends, had a great time, they flew back and I stayed for my meeting.

I skipped an afternoon seminar one time in Boston. Beyond that, I've flown in early or stayed another day if I wanted any personal time off of a work trip. But never would I simply not go to whatever I was being paid to go to.

I rarely go to the night events at a conference unless its something I want to do. I went to a conference in San Diego that had a networking cocktail on the deck of a battleship - that was cool. I was in Milwaukee and they had something similar at Dave and Busters. Skipped that.

I've taken my family with me to a conference to Orlando. The room was paid for, I only submitted my actual expenses and I attended every session. There was zero additional cost to my company, and my family was able to enjoy the pool while I was attending sessions.

The worst that I've done is taken a couple of bumps on overbooked flights so that I could rack up the free air fare for future trips.

I figured out that I would just miss the pre-conference cocktail party. So every time they'd ask someone to volunteer to be bumped, I'd negotiate some free tickets and have a seat.

I ended up with two free tickets to New York and back.

Told my boss I'd gotten bumped off of two flights, he apologized for my inconvenience.

I'll plan some of my business trips around events - Bama played Notre Dame in basketball at south bend. Planned business meeting in Chicago and went to game.
