Yep. This probably happens to me once every month or two. I generally get a jolt of what I assume is adrenaline and it sometimes takes me a bit to go back to sleep. I never knew this was a "thing" until this thread.

quote:

The "hypnagogic jerk" is an involuntary muscle spasm or twitch that occurs as a person is drifting off to sleep. The muscle spasms may occur spontaneously or may be induced by sound, light or other external stimuli. Some people report hypnagogic jerks accompanied by hallucinations, dreams, the sensation of falling, or bright lights and loud noises coming from inside the head.

Also have this sometimes.

It usually accompanies sleep paralysis
Paralyzingly fear trying to grip you while terrible aggressive hallucinations happen all around you.

It's not fun

OP,
Yes, I dealt with the same issue for several years, it was like a gun going off next to my head. Luckily it hasn't happened in nearly five years or so. It's a rare condition from my understanding, but it does exist

Every night, just as I'm about to fall asleep. For a while, I actually got up to make sure that no one was in the house.

Yes I have, but I've also farted so loud that it woke me out of a dead sleep.

I have it just about every night

I never knew that.

I've only had it happen once that I can remember. It was a car hitting a light pole across the street at 80 mph.

Never had that but one night I slept walked. Went to sleep in my normal bed and woke up the next morning in my guest room, naked, holding my deer rifle across my chest.

Don't remember anything. It freaked me out. The thing is, the rifle was locked in a safe unloaded. In my sleepwalk I had the cognitive ability to enter the code and load the gun
