I don’t think I’ve ever eaten cooked sushi... raw sushi is the tits.

Violet roll from Mikimoto is where it’s at.

Got sick once in 35 years of eating sushi. I had a spicy seafood salad (raw tuna, salmon, and yellowtail) at Shogun in Metairie. Had a bellyache for 3 days. around 1998?

If the raw fish smells or tastes fishy, DO NOT EAT IT. Smell it before you put it in your mouth. Spit it out if necessary, and tell the chef right away. The exception is mackerel, which is supposed to taste fishy and oily, either cured or raw. I like it, most don't. "Cat food!"

I would never eat raw fish sushi from Rouse's or Albertson's. A matter of quality and taste more than safety.

I have eaten California rolls and some raw sushi rolls at Chinese buffets. Usually not very good. Japanese sushi buffets are okay.

If we want raw sushi, we go to a quality Japanese sushi bar, sit at the bar if we can, and chat with the chef as to what is the best and freshest fish today. Most chefs like to do an "omakase" - chef's choice. I've had our favorite chef at Sushi Yama do omakase for The Lovely & Talented Mrs. Lammo and me for years. We never need a menu. Sometimes we will suggest something, and he will quietly shake his head because what we asked for, while available, is not his very, very best and freshest raw fish and other items.

You probably should start with a simple raw tuna roll. The tuna should not be fishy at all, but rather have a light, delicate flavor and a medium soft texture.

No, but I got sick from poke. Who knew college age kids in a fast food type atmosphere couldn’t handle raw food properly...

I never ate raw sushi. Drank a little too much saki and ended up a bowl of raw salmon with fish roe at Sushiyama. Sushiyama can make this roll-raw salmon with mango and cream cheese on the inside and seared pepper tuna with strawberries on top.

Have any of you ever gotten sick from eating raw sushi? I’ve only eaten the fully cooked variety. Been wanting to try the raw salmon and tuna varieties, but admittedly am cautious.

Good call. You should remain cautious. Its an industry strongly built on the cooked variety worldwide, but every so often you hear of a brave cowboy ordering the raw variety and about 30% of those times all hell breaks loose and sickness ensues. I myself have never met one of those cowboys but have heard stories. WTF dude

Redundant.

Some is cooked. The broiled eel. Tamago, which is a kinda omelet, shrimp is cooked. Very well marinated fish is ok. But, I'd really have to know the head chef.

In Sandy Utah, the Sushi Express is excellent. The owner/chef is a Japanese guy who bought fish in San Francisco for export to the Tokyo market for 20 years. Zero atmosphere, and the owner is not quite rude, but very close. But the sushi is fresh and top grade. I'd eat raw sushi there, but rarely anywhere else. And the pricing is very reasonable.

What are you talking about? It's an industry built on the cooked variety? No it is not. Every so often somebody orders raw sushi? Most of the time people are eating raw fish in a sushi restaurant. 30% of the time people get sick? That is just a pull a number out of my arse bullshite statement.

You can smell bad fish before you eat it. If you're eating sushi, you shouldn't smell a strong fish odor.
