Nooooooooooo. After spending the last 10 years living in the country and dealing with other people's shite eaters I am not an advocate of this method. I have always just shot the dogs I had who were no account. Including some of the above mentioned drop offs.

You don't know what it means to be a pack leader.

We are crate training, but the dog will live in the crate at this rate. which is preferable to the shelter she was in.

How often are you feeding your dog? How often are you supplying it with water? How often do you take her out? How big of crate are you using?

Walks help, but have you tried socializing her around other dogs to play and exercise? What are you doing to stimulate her mind?

A month at camp bow-wow would straighten her up. Would run you around $1200-$1500. With your son not caring about the dog I'd just be "that guy" and take her back and save the money.

Always is. We just vastly overestimated our sons interest. I am fully aware of our mistake in this regard.

Have you tried separation training rather than responding with aggression?

Dog nips, stick it in the kennel for several minutes. Let it out after it calms down, and if it nips again then start over.

For all the crate trainers out there, how many hours per day were the dogs crated? Or percentage of time crated vs not crated.

I never proclaimed to know it all or know everything about OP's family. However, based upon the OP message, this family is clearly not ready to raise, train, care or love a dog.

The OP even admitted to it. Go waste your time on someone else.
