I don't think it's that extreme but it'll get there. Coworker taking a humanities course told me the professor speaks out against 'Protestant work ethic that foolishly preaches a 'lift yourself up by your bootstraps' mentality' and told students that 'racism and homophobia will be exposed this semester, I'm not here to make you feel comfortable' and mentions Alton Sterling a lot. FWIW, I don't have feelings one way or another about Sterling. But I don't think it's a topic for a professor to bring up every week.

I'm honestly fine with all of that. College is supposed to be about being exposed to new and different ideas, even bad ones. What I'm against is censorship in the name of tolerance.

True. I guess the remarks my co-worker repeated don't really bother me, it's the fact that in a professor/student situation, can a student who disagrees speak out without fear of being penalized with a lower grade?
What if you cite a statistic and it is determined to be "racist"? Or if you defend a police officer? I just worry that we are creating "safe spaces" for some groups at the expense of others. But yes on the whole, I do think it is good for college to open students' minds to ideas they never thought of before. As a white male, I'm sure there are things about feminism and race that would never occur to me, but I would also want the freedom to speak my opinion and not just listen all the time.

This is about power.
All these little "microaggressions" that are allegedly offensive to people and the necessity of trigger warnings is a power play used by people who want to immediately shut down and invalidate what people (who are almost exclusively white) want to say.
Taken to the next level, we see what happens. Episodes surrounding these forms of "oppression" lead to demands for changes in curriculum and the removal of (again, almost exclusively white) administrators.
How about instead of bending to them, we teach them to have thicker skin? Instead of orientations where we teach people to watch every syllable coming out of their mouth OR ELSE, we have orientations where we say... "This college does not condone discrimination against anyone for race, gender, creed, or religion. As such, all views here are welcome. And as such, we expect everyone to be tolerant of those views. Everyone means everyone. EVERYONE."

Of course a student should be able to voice a dissenting opinion if the professor opens the class up to a discussion about it. But the problem I'm seeing on both sides is that students think that their opinions should be heard any time they disagree with something being taught.
If you study Marx or Adam Smith, you're not expected to agree with the material, you're expected to understand it. You can and should debate it amongst your friends or outside of class, but just because you disagree doesn't mean your voice deserves to be heard. And it certainly doesn't give a student license to censor a goddamn professor, no matter how whackadoo that material might be.
