European Union to Buy More U.S. LNG

The European Union will look to import more LNG from the United States and other countries and accelerate the rollout of renewable energy as it seeks to replace the Russian gas supply and cut its gas dependence, European Energy Commissioner Dan Jørgensen told Reuters.
“Instead of using taxpayers' money, citizens' money, to pay for gas where the revenue goes into Putin's war chest, we need to make sure that we produce our own energy,” Jørgensen said in a joint media interview.
To reduce the overall reliance on fossil fuels the EU plans to adopt legislation to ease permitting rules that would speed up faster deployment of solar and wind power capacity, the Commissioner added.
The EU will aim to meet its gas demand from sources other than Russia, the commissioner said.
“There will still be the need for gas, and there we will have to find other sources than Russia, and that can also mean bigger import from the U.S,” Jørgensen told Reuters.
Increased purchases of U.S. LNG could also help the EU avoid potential tariffs from U.S. President Donald Trump.
Last month, President Trump urged the EU, again, to buy more American oil and gas to avoid tariffs.

The potential investment in LNG projects abroad would be part of an EU plan to lower the high energy prices that have been burdening households and reducing Europe’s industrial competitiveness since the 2022 energy crisis.
The Commission looks to “immediately engage with reliable LNG suppliers to identify additional cost competitive imports from existing and future LNG export projects,” according to the draft seen by Reuters.

It's nice that we are selling but the world needs more nuclear power instead.

The new U.S. Energy Secretary is a big proponent of nuclear. I just think there's still a public perception/safety worry hurdle that needs to be satisfied.

Conquering nuclear fusion will be the next watershed moment in technological innovation.

You are not wrong but nuclear has trouble competing with natural gas.
It takes 12-20 years to break even on a nuclear power plant. It takes decades to start up.
It takes 4-8 years to break even on a natural gas power plant. It takes 1-2 years to start up.
If you are an investor and want a low risk 10-12% dividend with tax incentives where are you dumping your money?

The world needs to invest in all forms of energy; carbon based energy, nuclear, solar, wind, hydrothermal, all of it. There is a direct correlation between price of energy and standard of living and quality of life.
This idea that we are energy limited is stupid and should be viewed as such. Invest in it all, make it more affordable and watch the economies boom.

Wish they would fire up Gibbons Creek coal-fire power plant again but I think most of it is gone. Going to cherish having Fayette County while it is still going.

I attended the big Geothermal conference in Offenburg the past 2 days. Was told there are 140 Geothermal projects in the pipeline for Europe. Very impressive how much that industry is growing here.

Interesting that you bring this up. I was at a national data center conference yesterday and SMR's were a big topic in addressing the power issues that the industry is facing. The concensus was that it's something to watch in the near future.

Ignorance gone to seed.

Completely agree.
I'm not opposed to so-called renewable energy sources like wind and solar. I'm just opposed to governments imposing more and more restrictions on fossil fuel sources and constantly pushing a negative narrative about them in order to recklessly force conversions over to those less efficient sources.

I remember a particularly Orange Fellow talked about this a few years ago. Who could it be? But, these are the same Germans that shut down their nuke plants because of Fukushima and the tsunami, with no real plan. At least the French have nuke after nuke after nuke just off the coast of the Med. I counted about five between Marseille and Barca in French territory.
Why does it take so long to build a nuke, again? Gov't rules and lawsuits by greens. Remember when Clinton? said that oil from ANWR would take a decade to get to a refinery, in what, 1994? Well, a-hole, that would have made it live twenty years ago.

Of all the anti-fossil fuel energy sources available, I think that one has a real chance to be a game changer in efficiency, economics and public perception.
Though...I guess when more and more of the anti-fracking enviro freaks start finding out why there's suddenly been a recent breakthrough in the engineering techniques, they'll protest that source too.

I see no chance that fracking is ever allowed in Europe. Can you imagine an army of fracking trucks rolling up into downtown Vienna?
The future appears to be the closed loop designs. I had dinner Wednesday night with one of the partners on the Eavor loop. They are very close to figuring this technology out. Once they put it online and start producing power we expect to see lots of these projects suddenly go into the planning stages.

Geothermal involves very deep, complex, and challenging wells to be drilled. Do you know who’s really good at that? HAL, Schlumberger, and Baker. (Rhetorical question I know you knew the answer)
It’s also a big component of why greenies hate CCUS; one because it allows for the use of fossil fuels, but now because these oilfield service companies are making bank off the drilling of these Class 6 wells.

That's not entirely true. I have 2 GT projects going that are only 2000m TVD. The Eavor project is around 4500m TVD. We gave 2 GT projects coming up in Switzerland and those are only around 4000m TVD.

ragincajun? Do we have enough natural gas to supply the free world for the next decade?

Just need to come up with a good sneaky disguise. Maybe Lt Hannibal Smith can think of something.
