Yeah, even the people older than me act un-fireable. Just all around. Not just kids.

as always the pendulum swings too far, yes quality of life is important, no the company does not own me, but that doesn’t mean that the employees don’t have the responsibility and obligation to do the job they’re being paid to do, entitled is an accurate term as are lazy and spoiled

If your job is done on a laptop there’s zero reason to be an arse in a seat for 8-10 hours per day.

Maybe there's been an uptick since COVID, but I'm sure the lame excuses to get out of work were going on well before COVID.
Look, I think having "core work hours" from 10-3 can be reasonable, but if you're doing a productive job, who cares if you leave at 3:30 to take little Jimmy to his baseball practice or whatever?
I remember at my last job, my clients loved me, I was doing a really solid job, but because I wasn't answering non-urgent Teams messages within 15 minutes of work starting, I was getting eviscerated by my supervisor because my colleague of course had to make a big deal of it. That's not the type of environment I want to work in.

I hate this mindset. It's the leaders responsibility to tell people they should do the work that very apparently needs to be done?

There is a lot of hopelessness in the younger generations. Many of them never feel like they'll have a shot at homeownership or retirement even if they do the right thing - so why suffer?
Basically we have multiple demoralized generations that feel disposable and worthless. Those feelings then get taken into the workplace.

I'm always amazed at how many people (especially women) are "soooo overworked".
They spend more time bitching about work, than actually working.

We assign mentors for a year to incoming just graduated engineers. Some I thought would never make it became superstars, some I thought would be superstars flamed out. I’ve mentored dozens, within 6 months I know who’s got it and who doesn’t.
This in a large company, not every small business can do it but you need a process to develop and grow talent.
Keep some mid grades because someone has to do the routine grunt work.
Regardless, the 80/20 rule applies here as well. Twenty percent of your employees will do eighty percent of the high value productive work, and another 20% will cause 80% of the problems.
As long as the work gets done and you’re not needed in the office, I don’t care if you’re at your desk or fishing off Grand Isle. Abuse that privilege though and on the second strike you’re out.

Hard work is for suckers. You won’t care about how many hours you logged on your deathbed.

Engineers in a large petrochemical company. My experience with several hundred of them is that they do not realize that " their purpose is to earn a profit for the stockholder and fund expansion". and "profit is what's left over when expense is subtracted from sales"
Had one that said his job was to make pounds, not manage cost
Another going through site closure, had to have it explained that losing less is a great objective.
Another claimed that they were losing a penny a pound but they could make it up on volume
A site wide maintenance manager could not comprehend why heavy equipment ownership could be cheaper than a contractor{contractor profit issue}
Employee scrap sales being taken advantage of, by company resources being used to prefab bbq pits and trailers

Leader sets a vision and goals, they get it done. 20% of people have a shot at understanding what needs to be done without explicit direction. 60% need explicit direction but will follow the 20% who can understand the vision. The last 20% are hot garbage.

Entitled employees is the unemployed Lafayette tik tok housewife who makes more than a doctor by posting 25 second clips of cooking like she is a Applebee's cook. while she's not even qualified to wash dishes there.
She could watch the Kardashian's all day and make more than 150k

It's worse when you have to be the one paying them bc it kills you when you think about it every payday.

$150k a year? Are you hiring?

They all working from home in their pajamas.

They give 50% because they figured out early on that giving 150% the 1st year didn't result in a promotion. Can you blame them? Why give 150% when you can give 50% and still be considered for a promotion at the same way too late date? Rewards them and effort will come.

In my company, The younger people do about 90% of the actual work. Those under 35 years age pretty much do everything. There's like 4 or 5 people that work from home in Nevada, Europe, and New Orleans that don't do shite. They are all around 50. We're based in Central Time Zone.
Basically of the 5 or 6 people that work remote at our company, 2 are actually hard working, and I believe are truly as contributing as those in the office. But 3 of the 5 are completely useless and probably suck up bare minimum 800k to 1 mil in salary combined a year. They aren't ever on any work call, email chain, nothing.
Basically, I have the exact opposite opinion of everyone on here. Those under 32 probably put in 90% of the true actual work at my company. They produce every single deliverable. The only thing those older than that age do is interpret the work and make a call on it. Which is something that those who actually do the work could easily do because they actually did the work and understand it from a 360 degree view.
